Everyone knows that Pokemon learn moves as they level up, or they can be taught moves via TMs/HMs/TRs. In competitive play or Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl's Battle Tower, some Pokemon will know moves that can't be learned via leveling up or don't exist as TMs. Since Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl don't include Pokemon beyond the Sinnoh region, some Egg Moves are unavailable for the offspring to inherit.

Originally, Pokemon would only have an Egg Move if it was inherited from the male parent Pokemon. However, Pokemon that broke out during Swarms or were found using the DexNav (Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire) would occasionally know an Egg Move. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl allows trainers to obtain Egg Moves in two different ways: having Pokemon breed at the Day Care, or catching the Pokemon in the Grand Underground.

Inheriting the Egg Move

Pokemon can breed together so long as they are part of the same Egg Group. The Egg Move is inherited from the father while the species of the offspring is determined by the mother.

For example, Cynthia's Milotic has the move Mirror Coat, which Milotic can't learn by leveling or by TM. However, Corsola, who is compatible with Milotic, learns Mirror Coat at level 55 in generation 8. So, in order for Cynthia to have gotten Milotic with Mirror Coat (if she were like any other trainer), she had a female Feebas or Milotic breed with a male Corsola who knew Mirror Coat.

Chain Breeding

Not all Egg Moves are easy to breed. Sometimes, it's necessary to "chain breed" to get an Egg Move. This is a long process that requires two or more steps in the breeding process.

For example, the Horsea-line doesn't learn Clear Smog by leveling. Horsea instead would have to inherit Clear Smog from a Pokemon that can breed with its Egg Group. This means Horsea could inherit Clear Smog from a male Weezing, which would have to breed with a female Gastrodon, who shares the same Egg Group as Weezing. Its Shellos offspring needs to be male and have Clear Smog, would then have to breed with a female Horsea/Seadra/Kingdra.

Since Gastrodon and Shellos have two Egg Groups (Water 1 and Amorphous), they can breed with other Pokemon of Water 1 or Amorphous as well. Weezing only has one Egg Group, which is Amorphous. Horsea, like Shellos, is part of Water 1 Egg Group, and its Dragon Egg Group means it can breed with other Dragon Egg Groups, thus passing on Clear Smog to another generation as long as the offspring Horsea is male.

Catching Pokemon in the Grand Underground

The final way to get Egg Moves is by catching Pokemon in the Grand Underground. The Pokemon here will have a randomized Egg Move, so if it doesn't have the move trainers want, they'll need to try and catch another one. Unless the wild Pokemon goes through all its moves, it's impossible to tell what Egg Move it has until it's been caught or if the opponent Pokemon uses it in battle. For example, one Houndoom may have Thunder Fang while another may have Feint.

Any Egg Moves that are forgotten can be relearned at the Move Tutor in Pastoria City. However, Egg Moves that were inherited from other Generation 8 games can't be remembered.

Some Pokemon like Chatot could learn Boomburst through Noivern, but since Noivern isn't catchable in Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, Chatot can't use that move in this game. This, unfortunately, applies to several Pokemon in Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl.

Another example would be Starly unable to have Detect as an Egg Move because one of its parent Pokemon, the Pidove line, isn't available to breed with Starly's other parent (Starly line). Despite this drawback, trainers can still get Pokemon with most of their Egg Moves through breeding Pokemon or catching them in the Grand Underground.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl are available now on Nintendo Switch.
