In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl, players can explore the massive underground network of tunnels called the Grand Underground for a variety of new Pokemon. However, players can also head there to grab fossils and make those fossils into new Pokemon.

The Grand Underground is a massive network of underground tunnels in the new Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. These tunnels open up into a number of caves that are themed, allowing players to catch a variety of Pokemon that usually follow that theme. However, before Pokemon players leave the Grand Underground, they should check out some of the tunnels to see if they have some fossils to bring back to Eterna City.

Updated December 24th, 2021 by Russ Boswell: Thanks to the introduction of the Grand Underground in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, players now have miles of tunnels to explore, with many Pokemon from the National Pokedex making their debut in Sinnoh. This includes an array of Fossil Pokemon that would-be archaeologists can un-Earth themselves. But how exactly do players find Fossils in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond? And which Pokemon show up in the Grand Underground fossils? To better answer those questions, the following list has been updated with even more information.

How to Find Fossils in the Grand Underground

In order to nab some fossils, players will first have to visit the Underground Man's House in Eterna City. The Underground Man himself will be there, waiting for the player in his blue jumpsuit. If players talk to him, he will give them an Explorer Kit, which is the only thing needed to start digging for fossils. Once the Explorer Kit is secured, players will need to head to the Grand Underground, which is a new location in Shining Pearl and Brilliant Diamond.

To head to the Grand Underground's map, simply use the Explorer's Kit in the overworld. Fossils can be found in the walls of any of the tunnels between caves, so players will want to head to one of those. The walls that contain fossils will be marked on the mini-map with little gold glittering spots. Just walk up to the spot and press the interact button until the exact correct spot is found. Once it is, players will get a message on the screen: "The wall is bulging slightly. Would you like to try digging into it?" Press "Yes," and a fossil digging mini-game will begin.

In both Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl, the screen will look like it does above. All of the brown spots only have to be hit once, but the gray spots have to be hit twice to reach the level of the fossils. Players should interact with several spots around the map until an object appears underneath the rubble. At the top of the screen is a crack that grows with each hit, and players need to find their fossil and completely excavate it before the crack goes all the way to the left side of the screen; this will make the wall collapse, and any still-buried fossils will be gone with it.

Once a fossil is uncovered and players have it in their inventory, they need to leave the Underground and fast-travel to Oreburgh City. Look for the Mining Museum; inside will be a man that can help players turn fossils into live Pokemon. This blue-haired man will be behind the counter when players first enter the building. Talk to him and give him the fossil, then leave. When the players reenter the building, a new Pokemon will be waiting for them. In order to pick up the new Pokemon, players will have to have an empty slot on their team.
