It has become a tradition for the post-game of mainline Pokemon games to offer some form of battle facility that players can continuously challenge. Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl are no different, with Sinnoh's original Battle Tower returning in these remakes.

Here, players will participate in 3v3 (or 4v4 in Doubles) competitive-style battles against NPCs, with the goal being to rack up as long a winning streak as possible. As long as players keep winning, they'll earn BP, which can be spent on some of the game's best items. Earning a long enough win streak will eventually allow players to challenge the master of the tower in a tough battle.

Banned Pokemon

Before players get ahead of themselves, certain Pokemon are not allowed in the Battle Tower under any circumstances. These Pokemon have some ridiculous strength that would significantly negate the challenge of the tower. On the upside, however, it means trainers can be sure they won't have to face these powerful Pokemon.

These 12 Pokemon are all Legendary or Mythical Pokemon, with their enhanced stats and abilities making them unfair competition for the tower:

  • Mewtwo
  • Mew
  • Ho-oh
  • Lugia
  • Kyogre
  • Groudon
  • Rayquaza
  • Jirachi
  • Manaphy

All other Pokemon are valid for entry into the tower, so players can still bring some Legendary power with them if they want.

Tower Tycoon Palmer

Pokemon Tycoon Palmer

While there are plenty of challenging trainers in the Battle Tower, the tough battler that oversees the lot is Tycoon Palmer. The dad of the player's rival, he is one of Sinnoh's toughest trainers who will battle the player twice on their path through the tower, with a different team both times.

The first encounter happens after the player has reached their 21st battle. Here, Palmer will hold Milotic, Dragonite, and Rhyperior, which will require a careful strategy to pick apart. The second battle with Palmer happens once the player reaches the 49th battle. Players will be up against an all-Legendary onslaught, with Regigigas, Cresselia, and Heatran to contend with.

Pokemon Gyarados roaring in battle

There are many different ways players can tackle the tower, and with good strategy, they can reach the top with theoretically any Pokemon. However, there are some Pokemon that are more reliable than others and combinations of Pokemon that work exceptionally well together.

Starmie, Azelf, Gengar and Gyarados are fantastic options because they hit the critical areas required for success. The first is above-average Speed, as hitting first will save every inch of HP required. Secondly, they have a wide learnset, meaning exceptional type coverage; not to mention their favorable abilities. Each of these Pokemon has its ups and downs, but Gyarados is especially recommended, as it matches up well against almost all of Tycoon Palmer's Pokemon.

Take A Break After 7 Trainers

Rather than being locked into a massive streak of battles until reaching the top, the player is given the opportunity to take a break from their challenge after every 7 wins. In truth, this doesn't offer players much other than an opportunity to stop playing for a while if they need to.

However, knowing exactly how long the road ahead is can allow players to plan their strategy accordingly. While players can't change the team they're using for the challenge between lots of 7, they can alter the order in which they send them out.

Win Streak Rewards

Taking on the challenge for the challenge's sake is all well and good, but players ultimately expect to get something out of this venture. The rewards come in the form of BP, a currency that can be spent in the Battle Tower's shops. 3 BP is awarded after every set of 7 battles, with 20 BP being awarded after beating Tycoon Palmer.

On offer are all sorts of items that competitive Pokemon players will covet, from stat-altering mints & nutrients to competitive berries to powerful held items like the Choice Scarf and Life Orb. There is also a TM Shop, where players can buy an unlimited amount of rarer TMs like Earthquake, Arial Ace, and Surf.

Competitive Conditions

As previously stated, battles in the Battle Tower are fought under competitive conditions, which remove some of the key advantages players typically have in NPC battles. Firstly, everyone's level is capped at 50, meaning Pokemon will always be on a level playing field.

As well as not being able to level up past their problems, players will not have access to their bags. This means that no healing items can be bestowed upon Pokemon mid-battle. The only items Pokemon will have access to are the ones they're holding at the start, and the only healing capabilities will be in the Pokemon's movesets.

Master Class

Once players have won 49 battles in a row and beaten Tycoon Palmer for a second time, they may think their challenge is complete. That's simply not the case, though. Firstly, players can keep their streak going as long as possible, earning 7 BP per set rather than 3. Once that streak ends, though, Master Class is unlocked.

To put it simply, trainers in Master Class are a lot tougher. The format stays the same, but opposing trainers will only be using fully-evolved Pokemon, and some of them will even be bringing Legendaries to the table. On top of that, they will start to employ competitive strategies, such as Trick Room or Double Team sets.
