Catching Pokemon is an essential and key point in the Pokemon series. Over time, different types of Poke Balls were added to gameplay to make it easier for trainers to catch wild Pokemon. Before the Johto region, trainers could catch Pokemon with only four different types of Poke Balls. In Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl and its remakes, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl, players can use several different types of Poke Balls for catching Pokemon.

A Poke Ball is measured by the Pokemon's catch rate and the Ball's success rate. Common Pokemon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (such as Starly) have a higher catch rate than legendary or higher-leveled Pokemon. Knowing what each Poke Ball can do will put the trainer to an advantage when trying to catch the Pokemon they want. While some Poke Balls can be bought at Pokemarts, some are exclusive and easy for trainers to miss.

Updated February 21, 2022 by Renri Seong: Most players know that to get more Poke Balls, they need to visit the nearby Poke Mart and purchase them. Occasionally, players can find them scattered in the wild or seek them out with the Dowsing Machine. With many Pokemon to catch in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, it doesn't hurt to know where to get each type of Poke Ball in the Sinnoh region. Some Poke Balls can't be bought until players are at the Elite Four. Luckily, there's an optional daily sidequest players that rewards Poke Balls not found in the market. The following guide has been updated to include more information on Poke Ball types in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.

Every Poke Ball in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

At the beginning of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, trainers can only afford to buy Poke Balls or Great Balls. As they venture further in their quest, they'll be able to buy Ultra Balls or unique Poke Balls such as Dusk Balls or Quick Balls. Since Poke Balls with higher success rates cost more, it's not a bad idea to start saving up money for future purchases.

Once trainers have a variety of Poke Balls in their inventory, use the right Poke Ball for the right job to ensure a successful capture.

Daily Newspaper in Solaceon City

Right next door to the Pokemon Center in Solaceon Town is the Pokemon News Press. Speak to the man wearing shades at the desk to receive the daily quest. He will name a Pokemon that he wants to see, and players have until the end of the day to show him that Pokemon. Unlike Diamond & Pearl, the Pokemon doesn't have to be in the party in BDSP. So go out and catch the Pokemon, then return to the News Press to turn in the quest.

As a reward, the Press will reward players with a random special Poke Ball. This means Dusk Balls, Luxury Balls, Net Balls, Repeat Balls, Dive Balls, Quick Balls, and Timer Balls.

Pokemon League and Ramanas Park

Every Poke Ball type that exists within BDSP is available for purchase at the stores in the Pokemon League and Ramanas Park. Excluding the Poke Ball/Great Ball/Ultra Ball/Heal Ball, all Poke Balls cost 1,000. This is the best way to stock up on Poke Balls. What holds this method back is that it takes the entirety of the main story to unlock.

Which Poke Balls For Legendary Pokemon

The best Poke Ball to use on Legendaries are the Ultra Balls or Timer Balls. This is because of the extremely low catch-rate of Legendary Pokemon. If players want to try their luck, they can throw a Quick Ball at the start of battle, but it's not guaranteed to work. Time Balls are recommended because of how long a battle between a Legendary Pokemon can take. It's likely that players will reach over 20 turns if the Pokemon is being too stubborn to stay in the Poke Ball. For Water-type Legendary Pokemon like Suicune, players can try and use a Net Ball.

Excluding the Sinnoh Legendaries, Legendary Pokemon can only be caught in Ramanas Park. Remember that the store within Ramanas Park is also one of the two places in Brillant Diamond/Shining Pearl where players can purchase all Poke Ball varieties.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl are available now on Nintendo Switch.
