Pokemon Black & White Break Japanese First Week Sales Record

Pokemon Black and White Rumoured North American Release Date

Pokémon Black and White have only been out in Japan for a few days, but that hasn’t stopped them from stamping their place in the pantheon of both Pokémon sales and Japanese game sales. Confirmed through Famitsu, Pokémon Black and White sold over 2.6 million units within the first two days of their release. Somebody should have told Japanese gamers that you gotta catch all the Pokémon, not all the copies of the game.

In order to get a better understanding of how impressive these sales numbers are, let’s run through some Japanese numbers for two entries in another popular franchise, Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy VIII sold 2.5 million units in its first week (an impressive number considering the time of its release), while Final Fantasy VII sold 2 million units in its first week.

Nintendo and GameFreak did a lot right with these new games to make them more appealing to gamers. Choosing to add a whole slew of new Pokémon and the inclusion of 3 vs. 3 battles are just some of the propositions that gamers obviously found the most interesting. Hopefully there will be a new set of Shiny Pokémon for this avid fan to spend his time finding.

Pokémon, the mega-popular franchise, has been around for about 15 years now, and instead of losing popularity, it only continues to grow. With TV shows, movies, and card games to supplement the content of the video games, Pokémon has become a brand many are familiar with. Pokémon Black and White only further proves that point with its amazing sales numbers.

No matter how you feel about Pokémon as a franchise or a property, you have to give credit where credit is due. The game series isn’t running out of steam by a long shot, it’s the franchise that gamers are sure to be hearing about well into old age.

How many Ranters out there are planning to pick up Black or White when they release in the States? Do you think we could beat Japan’s sales numbers?

Pokemon Black and White will make their way to your Nintendo DS sometime in Spring 2011.
