When discussing the best Pokemon types in the series, Ground-type Pokemon aren't mentioned as often as they should be. In addition to being immune to Electric-type attacks, Ground deals super-effective damage to no less than five different types, tying it with Fighting for the greatest number of offensive advantages. Against Electric, Poison, Steel, Rock, and Fire — all of which are powerful types themselves — Ground is unstoppable.

Each generation has introduced a number of moves for this powerful type, but even among each game's best contribution, some are better than others. Overpowered Z-moves and Max Moves are excluded here, as they require special circumstances to use. Of the eight Pokemon generations so far, which one has given Ground-type Pokemon the best standard move in their toolkit?

8 Generation 2: Magnitude

magnitude in gen 5 and 6

Magnitude is a bit of a gamble, as its power varies randomly with each use. When used, a message will display saying "Magnitude __," with the blank space being a number between 4 and 10. The lowest possible base power is 10; the highest, 150. However, these extremes have only a 5% chance each to occur. The most common outcome is Magnitude 7, which occurs 30% of the time and deals 70 base damage.

Magnitude has a high chance of dealing decent damage — 85% of the time, its base damage will be 50 or more. However, its unpredictable nature makes it difficult to use in high-stakes situations like Gym Battles. It's an interesting move, but it ranks at the bottom of this list.

7 Generation 3: Sand Tomb

Sand_Tomb

Though it doesn't have the highest base power of Gen 3's Ground-type moves, don't be fooled. In addition to its initial damage of 35 base power, Sand Tomb traps the target in its own tiny dust devil, which damages them at the end of every turn. This kind of chip damage is invaluable in difficult battles, and can easily turn the tides in the player's favor.

However, it is highly unlikely that Sand Tomb will ever take down an opponent in one hit. What's more, its 85% accuracy is rather poor considering its base damage. It's a good strategy to use Sand Tomb in tandem with other, more powerful moves, like the ones mentioned later on this list.

6 Generation 8: Scorching Sands

Scorching_Sands

The only non-Max move added in Gen 8, this move has a solid 70 base damage and 100% base accuracy, making it a reliable attack. Scorching Sands also has a 30% chance to leave the target with a burn, making it the only Ground-type attack capable of inflicting a status condition.

The extra damage inflicted by this status condition, as well as the debuff to a Burned Pokemon's Attack stat, makes it a very useful Ground-type move. Scorching Sands is a solid move, but it ranks in the middle of this list simply because other moves are more powerful.

5 Generation 5: Drill Run

Drill_Run

At 80 base power, Drill Run deals decent damage on a regular hit — but in addition to this, it also has an increased critical hit ratio. When landing a critical hit, a move will deal 1.5x its usual damage, making for some devastating blows. This move does have slightly lower base accuracy than most moves listed here, at 95%, but will still hit its target the majority of the time.

Drill Run is not as widely available as some other moves on this list; only seven Pokemon can learn it through level up, and only a few dozen via TM. However, for those that can learn it, it's a handy tool to have in any Trainer's arsenal.

4 Generation 4: Earth Power

Earth_Power

This generation only introduced two Ground-type moves, and with a base damage of 90 and 100% accuracy, Earth Power is the more powerful of them. It's a strong, reliable move, and in addition to its high damage, also has a 10% chance to lower the target's Special Defense.

Unlike most Ground-type moves, Earth Power is Special rather than Physical. This can be somewhat of a drawback, since most Ground-type Pokemon have higher Attack than Special Attack. However, Earth Power can be learned by a wide variety of Pokemon, some of which make great Special Attackers, like Claydol. Keep stats in mind when deciding which Pokemon should learn this move.

3 Generation 7: High Horsepower

High_Horsepower

With 95 base damage, High Horsepower is among the most powerful Ground-type moves out there. It also boasts 95% base accuracy, hitting its target the majority of the time. Though it has no secondary effects, this high amount of physical damage means that it really doesn't need any.

Like Drill Run, this move isn't the most widespread of Ground-Type attacks. Only a handful of Pokemon learn it through level-up. However, quite a few can learn it by TR. It's a straightforward move with no special gimmicks, but sometimes, sheer damage is all that's needed.

2 Generation 1: Earthquake

Earthquake

With 100 base power and 100% base accuracy, Earthquake is one of the most powerful, most reliable Ground-type moves out there. It is also learnable by a wide variety of Pokemon — the vast majority of Ground-types have this move in their repertoire, and several non-Ground types can use it to broaden their offensive advantages.

In addition, Earthquake will deal double damage to a Pokemon in the semi-invulnerable turn of the move Dig. In this attack, the user burrows its way underground and attacks on the next turn. While underground, it is safe from most attacks — but an earthquake will affect it even more than usual. Earthquake shares this property with the aforementioned Magnitude, but unlike that attack, consistently deals high damage without having to rely on RNG.

1 Generation 6: Precipice Blades

Groudon's signature move, introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, is truly worthy of this legendary Pokemon. This Physical attack boasts 120 base power, the highest of any move on this list. What's more, it has 10 PP, quite a few uses for such a powerful move.

The biggest drawback to this attack is its relatively low base accuracy. However, 85% is still relatively solid for a move with such high power. To increase its chances of hitting, players can boost the user's accuracy with held items such as the Wide Lens or the Zoom Lens.
