Despite being a starter choice in every generation, Grass-type Pokemon are often overlooked. Their vulnerability to flashy Fire-types (as well as several other type disadvantages) can make them seem weak, especially in comparison to other starters. In spite of that, every new game brings in some incredibly powerful Grass-types who often steal the show.

From cute friendly Pokemon to mythical creatures of legend, Grass-types are often more than meets the eye. Their cute exterior can hide powers that surprise even the most seasoned trainers. In every generation of the franchise, there are always a few Grass-types who stand out.

8 Generation VIII: Applin

Applin Pokemon Sword and Shield Wild Encounter

Sword and Shield, the eighth generation of Pokemon games, introduced Applin to the world. While its appearance may make this Grass/Dragon type seem less ferocious, it actually has incredible potential.

This Pokemon boasts the ability to evolve into either Flapple or Appletun depending on what it is fed. Applin not only has a rare type combination, but is even more unique when considering its evolutionary choices. Not many pokemon have the ability to choose what they evolve. In addition, both evolutions offer very powerful stats and move sets. While Applin itself may be on the weaker side, it is a seed that becomes strong and mighty when properly nurtured.

7 Generation VII: Kartana

Pokemon Kartana

One of the legendary Ultra Beasts, Kartana is a dual Steel and Grass-type introduced in the seventh generation. As a powerful, extradimensional Pokemon, Kartana boasts impressively high stats as well as unique and powerful moves.

Kartana is a powerful addition to any trainer's team. Being a combined Steel/Grass-type, Kartana is only week to Fighting and Fire moves-type. Having a limited number of vulnerabilities an advantage for Pokemon when going into battle; however, trainers must be wary as Kartana will take 4x damage from Fire moves, due to its dual weakness.

6 Generation VI: Gogoat

Pokemon Gogoat

Gogoat is a pure Grass-type that evolves from Skiddo at level 32, and is a reliable pokemon who makes a strong addition to any team. While Gogoat is not legendary and does not boast a rare dual-type, it is a strong Pokemon, especially considering how easy it is to catch and train. Gogoat can be found and caught in the Friend Safari, in the grass biome.

Gogoat has the highest HP stat of all Grass-types. Its move set is also powerful, able to learn intimidating attacks like Earthquake and Horn Leech. While it may not be flashy, it can round off any balanced Pokemon team.

5 Generation V: Virizion

Pokemon Virizion in the anime

Generation V introduced the Swords of Justice, an elite group of legendary Pokemon who all share the secondary Fighting-type as well as the ability Justified, which further increases their strength against Dark-types. Within that special group, Virizion is the Grass-type member.

Virizion is extremely powerful, able to learn moves like Solar Beam, Hyper Beam, and the unique Sacred Sword. Combine those devastating moves with Virizion's impressive base stats, this Grass-Type is a potent threat in any Pokemon battle.

4 Generation IV: Shaymin

Pokemon Shaymin

Besides being one of the cutest Pokemon since Pikachu, Shaymin is a mythical creature of immense power. Beyond the cuddly exterior is a powerful Pokemon whose body works to purify the surrounding land. Shaymin can also switch between its ground and sky form, adapting to handle any situation.

In battle, Shaymin boasts surprisingly high stats for its small stature. Being a mythical, its base stats reach a combined total of 600. In addition, at max level, Shaymin can learn its signature Seed Flare move. This devastatingly powerful Grass-type move can blow away even the most powerful opponents.

3 Generation III: Ludicolo

Pokemon, ludicolo

Introduced in the third generation, Ludicolo is one of the most iconic and interesting-looking pokemon in the series. A combined Water/Grass-type, Ludicolo is the third evolution of Lotad. While Lotad is a fairly common pokemon, not many trainers put in the work to bring it to the final form of Ludicolo.

Ludicolo is one of the few Grass-types who can hold their own against Fire-types, since its dual typing negates Grass's Fire weakness. Furthermore, Ludicolo can learn powerful Water-type moves such as Hydropump, which make it a real threat against any powerful Fire-types a trainer might face.

2 Generation II: Celebi

Pokemon Celebi

Celebi is the mythical guardian of the forest introduced in the second generation of Pokemon games. It has the powerful dual type of Grass / Psychic. Celebi has the ability to move through time, bringing lush forests and vegetation wherever it goes as a symbol of natural healing.

In battles, Celebi is a solid addition to any team. With the same base stat total as Shaymin with 600, Celebi packs a serious punch for its small size. In addition, being a Psychic type, Celebi can learn a plethora of powerful moves that will have opponents rushing to the nearest Pokemon Center.

1 Generation I: Bulbasaur

Pokemon Bulbasaur

The very first Pokemon in the entire Pokedex, Bulbasaur is many a trainer's first-ever Pokemon. Bestowed to hopeful Pokemon masters by Professor Oak, Bulbasaur is the window through which many players first got to know the Pokemon world. The cheerful and loyal nature of Bulbasaur secures it a position in the hearts of Pokemon lovers.

While Bulbasaur is only the first evolution of Venosaur, it is still a powerful companion in its own right. A stalwart friend through the trials faced by Pokemon trainers, Bulbasaur remains relevant all the way until the trainer has become league champion.
