While many Pokemon fans use their phones to play the popular mobile augmented reality game, Pokemon GO, and are likely preparing for the upcoming Charmander Community Day, that’s not the only thing dedicated fans can be doing with their phones. Thanks to a developer known as FrozenPenguinToaster, there is now a jailbroken app known as PokeCall that turns phone calls into Pokemon battles.

The simple answer to how he created the app is that he used TUCallCenter for the phone functions and SBInCallAlertManager for the UI. Interestingly enough, the current UI for the app is Pokemon Gold and Silver. Moreover, the app is designed to name the trainers faced after the person calling, and it’s able to customize the trainer sprite and the Pokemon that appears based on each contact.

FrozenPenguinToaster was also open to making some changes to the jailbroken app based on feedback from the community, such as having the option to change the UI to other Pokemon games or having unknown numbers appear as wild Pokemon or even MISSINGNO. It’s worth noting that it appears to only be available on iOS 11 at the moment, but it is likely to change and support iOS 10 when released. Check out the app in action below:

Some diehard fans may note that there’s no running from a Pokemon battle, but it’s a small slight to an otherwise beautifully made app. Though it was mentioned that users of the app could change what Pokemon appear, it’s unclear how many Pokemon are programmed into the app. For instance, while it may contain all the Kanto or Johto pokemon, it seems unlikely to contain the newly revealed Zeraora.

Overall, this app seems pretty impressive. Some users may be tempted to ignore phone calls in order to battle, or it’s possible to even have it as some form of distraction while on the phone. Other users even noted how it would be neat for other games such as Metal Gear Solid to have an app that highjacked phone calls. For mobile iOS users that have a jailbroken phone, it’s definitely worth checking out the PokeCall app when it is made available.
