Sony's recent State of Play showcased some of the first games that will be coming to Sony's PlayStation VR2 when it releases. With Sony already confirming that there will be over 20 launch titles for the platform, it seems that even with the reveal of games like Resident Evil: Village, The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution, and Horizon: Call of the Mountain likely arriving at launch, Sony's still not done gearing the headset up for release, despite the fact that fans still don't know when this will be. A new entry on the PlayStation Blog has now implied that the wait for PS VR2 could be longer than expected.

PS VR2 was first officially confirmed in early 2021, when Sony announced plans for a successor to 2016's headset built from the ground up for PlayStation 5. Later, in March of the same year the company revealed the first look at the new controllers which would replace the original headset's PlayStation Move controllers and feature haptic feedback similar to the PS5's DualSense controller. In January 2022, Sony revealed Horizon: Call of the Mountain, a spin-off of Guerilla's successful open-world Horizon franchise that is being developed exclusively for PS VR2 by Guerilla and recent Sony acquired studio Firesprite.

While the release of information regarding the headset has been slow, while the original PS VR has been supported by new releases such as Sam and Max: This Time It's Virtual and Moss: Book 2, each of which have been criticized due to the PS VR's now aging tech, Sony appears to have settled into the marketing cycle for PS VR2 by revealing multiple new titles coming to the platform during yesterday's State of Play. Notably absent from all of these trailers was a release date or window for each of the games showcased, outside of Resident Evil 4 Remake which will contain "PS VR 2 content."

It appears a release window has been revealed however, as the PlayStation Blog post for The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners - Chapter 2 has revealed that while the original PS VR version will release later this year, the PS VR2 version will release in 2023. Recent manufacturing rumors and leaks have also indicated at a 2023 release window for Sony's second virtual reality headset, with production set to begin during the second half of 2022.

This later release date than initially expected is likely why Sony has been so coy with revealing the launch window and price of the headset, especially with the current manufacturing delays affecting the tech industry. There is still a lot to learn regarding the PS VR2, its launch lineup, and details surrounding its release, so fans have a lot to look forward to for the rest of 2022.

PlayStation VR2 is currently in development.
