In an announcement released today, Mary Yee, the Vice President of Marketing for PlayStation, revealed that the PlayStation VR sold over three million units worldwide, together with 21.9 million PlayStation VR games. The Sony executive expressed her thanks to all the fans who showed their support, and said that the company is “thrilled that so many of our gamers have experienced the magic of VR and stepped into the captivating worlds that electrify our senses.”

This sales milestone was a huge jump from last year’s figures, when Shawn Layden, the President and CEO of Sony Interactive, announced that the PS VR sold over a million units back in June of 2017, which was roughly eight months after the device was released.

The PlayStation accessory became so popular that market research back in 2016 revealed that the PS VR took control of the market share over other VR devices such as Oculus and Vive. The market report was based on sales figures from 30 companies, with the PlayStation VR rising to the top.

Sony new PlayStation VR headset

Now, talking about PS VR games, Sony revealed that Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Sony’s PlayStation VR Worlds were the most-played games on the platform. Moreover, in light of the PS VR reaching 3 million units in sales, Sony took the opportunity to announce the release dates of two highly-anticipated PS VR games, Creed: Rise To Glory, on September 25, and Evasion on October 9.

The success of the PS VR is undoubtedly impressive, but not at all surprising, due to Sony’s massive database of players with a PlayStation 4, which of course, would only support the PS VR. This is not to say that the PS VR is not a good product. In fact, in our review of the PS VR, we were impressed with the headset’s ability to run smoothly straight out of the box. Sure, it may not be the most advanced VR headset out there, but it is still able to deliver an exciting VR experience for PS4 players.

Seeing that Sony is happy with how the PS VR performed in less than two years, who knows what the company has in store for the PS VR in the future?
