A new rumor suggests that PlayStation will soon announce a bunch of third-party content, hinting at a possible State of Play in the near future. Sony hosted plenty of State of Play events in 2022, featuring third-party and first-party games from a variety of genres.

State of Play showcases were usually smaller events that focused on games outside the AAA space, but 2022 marked a change in this trend due to several major announcements. This included new reveals like Tekken 8, Rise of the Ronin, and Resident Evil 4, as well as trailers for Final Fantasy 16, God of War Ragnarok, Street Fighter 6, and more. Now, it looks like Sony could soon announce a new showcase with a heavy focus on third-party content.

As reported by Insider Gaming, the seemingly retired leaker known as The Snitch posted new information on Discord, revealing that they received a DM from a reliable source about Sony’s plans. It states that PlayStation will announce “third-party stuff” very soon, possibly hinting at a new State of Play event coming in the near future. Fans should note that even though The Snitch was a reliable leaker, every rumor should be taken with a grain of salt.

The previous State of Play showcase took place in September 2022, so Sony’s third-party partners may have a significant chunk of content to announce for 2023 and beyond. Rumors of a remake of Metal Gear Solid have been circulating for a while now, and leaks point to it being a PlayStation 5 exclusive. So, Sony may use this opportunity to announce the Metal Gear Solid remake or similar third-party exclusives.

It may also not be limited to exclusive titles, as previous PlayStation events featured games like Hogwarts Legacy and Street Fighter 6. As of now, the leak shared by The Snitch doesn’t confirm that Sony will soon host a State of Play event, but it’s probably the most likely scenario based on the information available.

Sony usually reserves first-party content for PlayStation Showcase events, but the publisher didn’t host one in 2022. A rumor suggested that Sony didn’t host a PlayStation Showcase due to the ongoing investigation into Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision, though it did have some first-party announcements last year. Perhaps the biggest one was a confirmation of the release window of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is currently scheduled to launch in the fall of 2023.
