Sony is set to have a big year 2021. The PlayDtation 5 has launched, its exclusive titles are beginning to roll out, and more of the games players are looking forward to are beginning to get more specific windows or release dates, much like Resident Evil 8. The beginning of the new year is a great time for Sony to release a new State of Play presentation in order to help deliver more information about what's on the horizon for PS5 players.

With rumors that Sony will be delivering a new State of Play presentation soon, many players are wondering what all the next State of Play might deliver. Sony uses the State of Play presentations to show off new gameplay for its exclusives, debut new functionality for its consoles, and hint at the future of what's to come. Because of this and what's on the pipeline, this year's first State of Play should be big.

The State of Play presentation's biggest news will surely be information on more games coming to Sony's next-gen platform. With many timed and permanent exclusive titles already confirmed, Sony is likely to debut even more new gameplay for games like Returnal, which is nearing its March 19 release date, and other exclusive titles that are further from release like Horizon Forbidden West. Many fans will also be hoping for more information on other first-party titles like the next God of War.

Games at the First 2021 State of Play

It will be interesting to see which titles Sony chooses to highlight when it does release the next State of Play. Third-party games like Resident Evil 8 have used the presentation as a platform for presenting their games despite those games being multiplatform. And with many third-party games being released as timed exclusives on Sony's new console, it's likely that Sony will showcase these games as well.

Final Fantasy 16 is a prime candidate to be shown in a new Sony showcase. The next game from Square Enix is releasing as a timed exclusive for the PS5, and so far, Square Enix has been fairly tight lipped about new details. But with the relationship between it and Sony, it's fairly likely that the next game in the long-running franchise will get either another trailer for its story or (hopefully) some kind of gameplay demonstration. The Final Fantasy 16 developer has teased big announcements in 2021, and it seems feasible that those announcements would be made at a Sony State of Play.

Sony has been very quiet about God of War Ragnarok so far, and it seems like the easy choice in speculating what games may be included in a new State of Play. After the critical success of the last God of War, it makes sense that Sony would want to start off the new year with one of its most anticipated games in the spotlight. Fans still have many questions about Ragnarok, and the State of Play presentation would be a great place for Sony to answer them.

Perhaps the other most obvious choice would be Horizon Forbidden West another sequel to a critically acclaimed Sony exclusive. Now that development has moved from working on the initially-troubled PC port of Zero DawnGuerilla Games should be looking to build excitement for the follow-up to its futuristic open-world adventure. Sony has been similarly tight lipped with Horizon Forbidden West, and many would be glad to get new information.

On the more speculative side, it will be interesting to see if Sony surprises with revealing any new hardware for their PSVR. The headset that originally released back in 2016 is still compatible with the new PS5, but it isn't out of the question that Sony could reveal a new headset with higher screen fidelity and perhaps even a wireless way to play VR to compete with the Oculus 2. A PS5-native VR would eliminate some problems with playing PSVR games from last-gen as well.

There is currently no official word on the next State of Play, but the beginning of a new year in a new console cycle is likely to have Sony treat its next State of Play as an even bigger event than usual.

The PS5 is available now.
