While Sony once was a major presence at E3, the company has opted to skip the event entirely in recent years. As expected, Sony skipped E3 2021 as well, though it has promised to be part of the ongoing Summer Game Fest events. Sony has not made any official announcements about its Summer Game Fest plans, but rumor has it that it will include a brand new PlayStation State of Play event that will serve as its E3-equivalent.

These rumors were started by Resetera user Navtra, who has proven to be a reliable leaker in the past. On June 13, they teased that fans would only have to wait a couple of weeks for Sony's event, which means that if it exists, it should be taking place sooner rather than later. Since then, other leakers have chimed in about what the PlayStation State of Play event could entail, and if the leaks are real, then PlayStation fans may have an exciting show ahead of them.

Keep in mind that Sony has not officially announced the next PlayStation State of Play event at the time of this writing and so fans should take all of this information with a massive grain of salt. It's entirely possible that plans will change and the event won't take place anytime soon, and it's also possible that these leakers have inaccurate information and such an event was never planned. With that in mind, here are all the leaks about the PlayStation State of Play so far.

PlayStation State of Play Leaked Date

state of play 2021

According to the latest rumors and leaks, the PlayStation State of Play event will take place on Thursday, July 8. This would make sense as State of Play presentations have traditionally taken place on Thursdays, and that would fall within the general timeframe that has been suggested by insiders. However, there are other Thursdays in July when the PlayStation State of Play could take place instead, and it's also possible that one won't take place in July at all, so fans should keep that in mind.

For now, though, it may be a somewhat safe bet to pencil in July 8 as the potential date for the PlayStation State of Play. If the event is taking place within the next couple of weeks as rumored, then Sony should be providing some clarification on that front sooner rather than later.

Death Stranding: Director's Cut

Death Stranding Cardboard Box

Death Stranding: Director's Cut was announced at Summer Game Fest by game director Hideo Kojima, showing off gameplay seemingly inspired by Metal Gear Solid while promising to be the definitive version of the game. Signs point to Death Stranding: Director's Cut being a PS5 exclusive game, and if that's the case, one has to imagine that the game will be one of the titles showcased at the leaked PlayStation State of Play.

Another reason why fans think Death Stranding: Director's Cut could be at the State of Play is because of comments made by Geoff Keighley after its Summer Game Fest reveal. After revealing the Death Stranding: Director's Cut trailer, Keighley said that the game's full reveal "is just weeks away." That comment combined with the confirmation that PlayStation is part of Summer Game Fest (and has yet to have a presentation of its own) has fueled speculation that the game will indeed be at the event. "Weeks away" would also put it comfortably within that leaked July 8 date, so the stars seem to be aligning somewhat.

Ghost of Ikishima

The rumors of a PlayStation State of Play event really started to heat up when leaker Shpeshal_Nick posted about a Ghost of Tsushima standalone expansion called Ghost of Ikishima. It's unclear if Ghost of Ikishima is aiming to be a PS5 exclusive or if it will be a cross-gen game, but the belief is that it will be announced at the supposed PlayStation State of Play with a planned release date for 2021. If that's true, then one can expect a Ghost of Ikishima reveal to take place sooner rather than later, even if this leaked PlayStation State of Play event never takes place.

Other leakers and industry insiders have since backed up the claims that Ghost of Ikishima exists, so this rumor seems like it could very well be true. Fans should still keep their expectations in check for now, but considering Ghost of Tsushima's success, it would make sense for Sucker Punch to move forward with a smaller-scale project like this to whet fans' appetites and get PS5 owners involved with the series.

God of War: Ragnarok

Shpeshal_Nick has continued with their PlayStation State of Play leaks, this time claiming that the God of War: Ragnarok gameplay reveal will happen at the event. No further details about what the God of War: Ragnarok gameplay reveal will entail were revealed, but since the game was originally expected to launch in 2021, it wouldn't be all that surprising for fans to get their first glimpse at it soon.

All that's known about God of War: Ragnarok is that it is a cross-gen game and its release date was delayed to 2022. The God of War: Ragnarok title isn't even necessarily the game's official title, and it could very likely be called something completely different. If this God of War: Ragnarok gameplay reveal takes place as rumored, hopefully it comes with some clarification on that situation.

PlayStation State of Play "Big Surprise"

Besides Death Stranding: Director's CutGhost of Ikishima, and God of War: Ragnarok, it seems PlayStation fans may be in store for a "big surprise" at the event. Shpeshal_Nick has hinted as much in another tweet, and does not believe that the surprise has been spoiled just yet. This surprise could be just about anything, so let the speculation begin.
