E3 2021 took place earlier this month, giving console makers Xbox and Nintendo the chance to show off some of the big games coming to their platforms. The only console manufacturer that wasn't at the show was Sony, as PlayStation skipped E3 2021 entirely. While PlayStation did not have a presence at E3 2021, rumor has it that an E3-equivalent, PlayStation-centric event is still scheduled to take place at some point this summer and will likely come in the form of a new State of Play.

Sony has not officially announced the rumored PlayStation State of Play event, but that hasn't stopped the rumor mill. The latest rumor is that the PlayStation State of Play event will take place on Thursday, July 8 (PlayStation State of Play events have traditionally taken place on Thursdays). This date reportedly stems from a report by JeuxVideo as well as a comment on Reddit, and so fans should take the information with a massive grain of salt for now. However, as GamesRadar has pointed out, there's more evidence to suggest that the State of Play could be happening soon.

As some may recall, Death Stranding: Director's Cut was announced during the Summer Game Fest event that preceded E3. Following the trailer, Summer Game Fest host Geoff Keighley mentioned that the full reveal for Death Stranding: Director's Cut "is just weeks away." Since it seems like Death Stranding: Director's Cut is a PS5 exclusive, it would make sense for it to get the spotlight at a PlayStation State of Play, and the rumored July 8 date would certainly fall within "weeks" of Summer Game Fest.

This isn't the first time that we've heard rumblings of an E3-equivalent PlayStation State of Play event taking place this summer. Reliable leaker Navtra, who has accurately leaked PlayStation news in the past, is the one that first outed the existence of the supposed State of Play event. They said on June 13 that it would be "a couple more weeks" so even if the July 8 date is inaccurate, evidence is piling up that the State of Play could be happening soon regardless.

Whenever the next PlayStation State of Play does take place, it will be interesting to see if other recent leaks turn out to be accurate. A Ghost of Tsushima standalone expansion called Ghost of Ikishima was recently outed by leakers, with the game supposedly on track to release later this year. It's also been teased that Sony has a "big surprise" in store for fans, but what exactly that could be remains to be seen. For now, PlayStation fans should keep their expectations in check and wait for Sony to officially announce the date for the next State of Play before getting too excited.
