Following weeks of rumors and speculation, Sony finally confirmed the first PlayStation State of Play event for 2022. However, those hoping for a comprehensive State of Play covering a variety of PlayStation games may have been disappointed to learn that it would focus on upcoming racing game Gran Turismo 7 instead. But if a PlayStation pattern holds true, there may very well be a second State of Play - or some other kind of event - later this month.

This pattern was pointed out by Axios' Stephen Totilo. Totilo took to Twitter to point out that Sony hosted a Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart-focused State of Play event two weeks before Returnal's release date. Then Sony hosted a Horizon Forbidden West-focused State of Play two weeks before Rift Apart launched. And now Sony is hosting a Gran Turismo 7 State of Play on February 3, roughly two weeks before Horizon Forbidden West's release date.

If this pattern means anything, and it's not just coincidence, then it seems that another State of Play should be happening a couple weeks prior to Gran Turismo 7's release date. This would mean that the event, whatever form it may take, would happen sometime after Horizon Forbidden West launches on February 18 but prior to Gran Turismo 7 on March 4.

Of course, it's entirely possible that this PlayStation State of Play pattern is merely a coincidence, and so fans should keep their expectations in check. However, if a PlayStation State of Play does take place sometime between Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7, then there are a few distinct possibilities that come to mind as to which games may be featured.

Perhaps the most obvious choice would be the PlayStation 5 console exclusive game Forspoken, as it already has a solid release date for May 24. However, Forspoken is a Square Enix game and so far the pattern has focused on PlayStation-published titles that are pure PlayStation exclusives. This would potentially also rule out a game like Ghostwire: Tokyo from Tango Gameworks and Bethesda, which is scheduled for release at some point this year for PC and PS5.

Assuming those games are ruled out, the only thing left really would be God of War Ragnarok, another PlayStation exclusive that's believed to be releasing at some point later this year. Sony hasn't shown a lot of God of War Ragnarok just yet, and if the game is truly going to release in 2022, then it would make sense to pull the curtain back on it sooner rather than later.

Even if this pattern is broken this month, PlayStation fans shouldn't get too upset. There's plenty to look forward to these next few months, including the launch of Horizon Forbidden West in a couple of weeks, Gran Turismo 7 in March, Forspoken in May, and more.
