Sony has just announced a new PlayStation State of Play livestream for later this week, one that will put the spotlight on one of the summer’s most highly-anticipated triple-A blockbusters. These special events serve as a PlayStation-branded equivalent to Nintendo’s Direct livestreams, offering up exclusive looks at upcoming titles large and small. With larger gaming-themed events like E3 growing less prevalent in recent years, PlayStation’s State of Play shows have become a popular way of drumming up excitement for the year’s slate of PS5 games.The most recent PlayStation State of Play was held on February 23 and showcased a variety of indie titles and games for the then-newly released PlayStation VR 2 headset. The crown jewel of February’s PlayStation State of Play was the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, with developer Rocksteady showing off roughly 15 minutes of gameplay and story footage. Unfortunately, the new information revealed during this livestream only divided already weary players further, and Suicide Squad has reportedly been delayed once again in the wake of its showing at the last State of Play. Now Sony has announced a new PlayStation State of Play for later this week. According to a post on the official PlayStation Twitter account and a related article on PlayStation.com, this livestream will be held on Thursday, April 13 at 2 PM Pacific Time, 5 PM Eastern, and 11 PM Central European Summer Time. So far, the only game confirmed to be shown at this latest State of Play is Final Fantasy 16, with more than 20 minutes of new gameplay footage being promised.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting the next installment of the long-running Final Fantasy series, and Final Fantasy 16 promises to be one of the darkest and grittiest mainline entries to date. It recently went gold last week, about three months before it is set to launch as an initial PlayStation 5 exclusive on June 22. Square Enix has been slowly revealing details about Final Fantasy 16’s world and gameplay, including footage of a boss fight against the massive Titan and an appearance from Final Fantasy’s friendly Chocobo mounts.
Players won’t have to wait too much longer to see more of Final Fantasy 16 in action, as it will be the main attraction of this week’s PlayStation State of Play. There might be some other surprises in store at this event, so those eager for a glimpse at the future of PlayStation should tune in on Thursday, April 13.
