Rumors about a December PlayStation event have proven true as Sony announced Friday morning that it would be releasing one final State of Play video in 2019. Sony senior director of content communications Sid Shuman announced via the PlayStation Blog that the final 2019 State of Play will run on Tuesday, December 10, starting at 6:00 am PT. Shuman teased that Sony would have a variety of PS4-related announcements for the event, but also made clear that there were no plans to discuss the PS5 during the show.

While the PS5 may not be brought up during the upcoming State of Play, Sony's still planning on making it worth fans' while. Shuman says that the show is planned to last around 20 minutes long, which is typical. Through the 20 minutes, Sony will share a variety of "new game reveals, release date announcements, new gameplay footage, PlayStation Worldwide Studios updates, and more." It sounds like Sony is going to take the opportunity to build up the remaining year of PS4 releases before the deluge of PS5 marketing starts.

Shuman may be teasing big announcements for the State of Play, but he's not revealing any secrets just yet. No specific games are mentioned in the announcement post. The PS4 isn't even mentioned. Sony's ensuring that fans tune in to the show to hear all of the surprises. In the meantime, fans are left to speculate about just what Sony might have remaining unannounced for the PS4 in 2020.

Speculation about the event is already thriving. Two games, in particular, are already being discussed as having announcements planned for the event. The first is a currently unannounced game that was leaked in recent weeks. Resident Evil 3 Remake recently had some promo art leaked, leading to speculation that it would be announced soon. Geoff Keighley has already confirmed the game won't be at The Game Awards 2019, leaving the newly announced State of Play as a likely alternative. The other game is Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch's PS4 exclusive that remains without a release date.

With all of 2020 remaining before the PS5 takes over as Sony's flagship console, it will be interesting to see what's been reserved to release for the PS4 in its remaining time. The December 10 State of Play could show that Sony still has a big PS4 push planned for the first half of 2020. Or it could show that Sony's going to coast through the finish line and otherwise preserve its biggest plans for the PS5. That's a big burden for a 20-minute video show, but there aren't many other opportunities left for Sony to build up excitement for its 2020 plans.

The next PlayStation State of Play starts on Tuesday, December 10, at 6:00 am PT.
