The console wars may not be quite as vicious as they were just a few years ago, but PlayStation and Xbox are very much still competing with one another. While Xbox has pivoted more toward Cloud gaming and Xbox Game Pass as its main selling points, leaving PlayStation to sweep the first-party exclusive market, the two companies are still trying to sell their respective hardware, and trying to win that battle does lead to some overt moments of competition, with one potentially just around the corner.

Just a week ago, Xbox announced that it would be hosting its annual games showcase in just over a month's time, on June 11. Xbox is sure to make the most of this showcase, announcing new games, teasing some new projects, and giving updates on some of its most anticipated in-development titles. But while Xbox will undoubtedly have quite a lot to show, PlayStation might have even more, and if rumors are true, it might also beat Xbox to the punch.

Xbox hasn't had the best few weeks. Not only has Xbox's Activision-Blizzard acquisition been blocked by the UK's CMA, but the publisher's first big AAA exclusive of the year, Redfall, released to an incredibly underwhelming reception. Once again, Xbox fans find themselves wondering what went wrong, and if Xbox can manage to pull itself up from the gutter once again. Put simply, Xbox needs a win right now, and its upcoming June showcase is the best way to do that. This showcase can finally give fans some concrete release dates of some long-awaited titles, a deep-dive into Starfield, and hopefully some brand-new announcements that prove why Xbox is a brand worth sticking by.

But if recent rumors are true, PlayStation might not let Xbox have this win. For a while now, it's been heavily rumored that PlayStation will air its own games showcase around this part of the year, like it usually has. But according to recent rumors, mostly by Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb, PlayStation's showcase could end up airing as soon as May 25. If that ends up being true, then PlayStation might end up knocking the wind out of Xbox's sails before it even has the chance to set off.

The next PlayStation Showcase could end up being one of the greatest events in the company's long history. For the last few years, PlayStation has always had top-tier showcases, often packed to the brim with no-filler, all-killer reveals ranging from first-party exclusives to highly-anticipated third-party releases to innovative new hardware. While nothing official has been confirmed just yet, it seems likely that this PlayStation Showcase could be held up as one of the greatest of all time, with Marvel's Spider-Man 2 almost definitely getting a new look, The Last of Us Multiplayer being likely to appear, and then a plethora of potential first-party and third-party candidates for exciting announcements that range from a potential Ghost of Tsushima sequel to a Mortal Kombat 12 reveal.

If these rumors are true, then those aren't the only games PlayStation is bringing to its rumored showcase either. Apparently, Konami is working on several projects right now, and has struck a deal with Sony to put them on PlayStation 5 first. These apparently include a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake and a brand-new Castlevania game. If these rumors are true, then PlayStation's upcoming showcase could truly be incredible, and if it does end up airing just a few weeks before Xbox's own showcase, then it may seriously hurt Xbox's chance of winning back fans.
