Everyone remembers the September PlayStation Showcase for unveiling a number of new PlayStation titles, including God of War: Ragnarok, Spider-Man 2, and a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. What some people may not remember is that the showcase opened with a live-action sequence of an elaborate, city-wide game of chess with real people acting as the pieces.

At the time, it seemed a bit random (it’s not like it incorporated any PlayStation characters into it), but Sony has now announced a new community event themed around that live-action sequence. Called Seize the Throne, PlayStation players must work together to dethrone the King and, in doing so, win exclusive prizes.

Anyone who wishes to take part must first register through the official PlayStation website using their PlayStation Network account. Then all they need to do to contribute to the Community goals is use their PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5. Specifically, points can be earned by simply playing any PS4 or PS5 games, earning Trophies, or using the Share features. Games will need to be played for at least an hour to contribute points and shares and Trophies are limited to six per day. So, if someone earns seven Trophies in a single day, that seventh Trophy won’t earn any extra points.

The event is split into three stages. The first stage requires 25,000,000 points to reach the King’s tower. Stage two requires 100,000,000 points to access the inner chambers and then stage three requires 160,000,000 points to breach the throne room. For every goal cleared, participating players will receive exclusive rewards.

Stage one’s prizes are two PSN avatars depicting the black and white motorcycle "pieces" from the live-action sequence. Stage two’s prizes are another set of avatars, although these ones feature PlayStation icons. Namely, Kratos and Atreus from God of War, Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn and its upcoming sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, Nathan Drake from Uncharted, and a car presumably from Gran Turismo 7. Stage three’s prizes are three more chess themed avatars and a dynamic theme for the PS4, and only the PS4 since the PS5 doesn’t offer themes.

However, there are three additional prizes that will only go to one player each. On November 17th, three skill-based questions will be shared via the official website and whoever gets the closest correct answer will receive a prize. For question one, it’s a PS5 console. For question two, it’s a ring set shaped after the triangle, circle, square, and cross symbols on the PlayStation controller. For question three, it’s a Pulse 3D wireless headset and a PlayStation gift card.

More details can be found on the website. But it’s recommended that people sign up now. While registration will remain open through stages one and two, registering in stage two will mean you’re ineligible for stage one’s rewards.
