Sony is kicking off PlayStation Plus in 2017 the same way it was kicked off in 2016 – with a Double Fine adventure game! Day of the Tentacle headlines in January.
The end of 2016 has nearly arrived, ushering in a new year of video games. PlayStation Plus will coincidentally be starting 2017 the same way that it started 2016, with one of its headline PlayStation Plus offerings an adventure game from Double Fine. In 2015 it was Grim Fandago that was remastered, then in 2016 Day of the Tentacle was similarly updated. Much like Grim in January of 2016, January 2017 will feature Day of the Tentacle Remastered on PlayStation 4 via PlayStation Plus.
Day of the Tentacle Remastered is, of course, just one of six different titles being offered for free on PlayStation Plus in January 2017. As per usual, there will be two games for PlayStation 4, two for PlayStation 3, and two for PlayStation Vita, but several games will feature cross-buy which enables them across multiple platforms. In January, for instance, four of the six games will work on PS4 and four will also work on PS Vita.
Without further ado, here are the free games featured in January 2017's PlayStation Plus line-up:
- Day of the Tentacle Remastered (PS4, PS Vita)
- This War of Mine: The Little Ones (PS4)
- Blazerush (PS3)
- The Swindle (PS3, PS4, PS Vita)
- Azkend 2 (PS Vita)
- Titan Souls (PS Vita, PS4)
This round of PlayStation Plus releases has a bit of age on it. While both Day of the Tentacle Remastered and This War of Mine: The Little Ones were technically released in 2016, both are older titles – 1993 and 2015 respectively. The rest of the titles are from 2014 and 2015 as well, though Azkend 2 dates all the way back to 2012.

January's line-up is rather symbolic. Anyone reading the monthly comments on the PlayStation Plus announcements via the official PlayStation Blog will know that there is always a segment of players who vehemently disagree with the game choices. Picking another Double Fine adventure game remaster to kick off the year very clearly states that this is what PlayStation Plus is and what it will continue to be. PlayStation Plus is a platform for smaller games, often indies, to be showcased and shared across a wide audience that would otherwise never have tried them.
That "revelation" shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone at this point. While the service pre-PlayStation 4 might have been more inclined to offer larger, AAA releases, ever since it added PlayStation 4 smaller titles in the $15-20 price range has become its modus operandi. Lords of the Fallen, NBA2K16, and Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell were probably the "biggest" releases of PlayStation Plus in 2016, and even those are more comparable to the smaller titles on the service than to big major publisher titles. This is what PlayStation Plus is, and it's great.
PlayStation Plus for January 2017 will go live on the first Tuesday of the month, which should be January 3. That's also the day when December 2016's games will go offline, so make sure to download those games while you can.
