Sony is simplifying logins for its customers, with a new system being put into place that making logging into accounts easier. From now on, logging in to services like Sony Rewards or PlayStation Music will require a single unified account.

With the PlayStation 5’s cross-save situation being developer dependent, which has caused some controversy among PlayStation players, seeing a change that is likely to be well-received is good news for the tech giant. Sony ensures that the process will go smoothly, clarifying that if Sony Rewards accounts (or any other Sony service) are listed under different e-mails, a one-time sign in using a PSN ID will change the account’s info to match the PlayStation info.

Creating a unified Sony through PSN is undoubtedly a smart idea given the success of the PS4 and high expectations for PS5 sales. Per the Sony Rewards website, players who “already have an account on PlayStation Network” are good to go, as this account will work for every Sony service from now on. If players have a Sony Rewards account but no PSN ID, this will become their Sony account instead. Lastly, if players have no Sony account or PSN ID, the first account they create through a Sony service will work for every other Sony program.

To start the sign-in transfer process, logging into a program like Sony Rewards with the old information is all that must be done. From there, if players have a PSN ID linked under another e-mail, they will be asked to unify the accounts by inputting the PSN ID. Once complete, the PSN ID will now work for Sony Rewards and will replace the original sign-in info. This simple quality of life change should make accessing Sony accounts and consistently updated services like PS Now far easier, with the full list of unified programs listed below.

  • PlayStation Plus
  • PlayStation Music
  • PlayStation Video
  • PlayStation Now
  • Xperia Lounge
  • Xperia Store
  • Xperia Care
  • My Support
  • My Account
  • Developer World
  • Sony Community
  • Sony Rewards
  • Sony Mobile

This unified account system is far from the only change being made by Sony, however, as the company is making other big moves ahead of PlayStation 5’s November launch. One such move sees new web and mobile versions of the PlayStation Store set to launch later this month, both of which will remove PS3, PSP, and Vita Support. The new websites, like the sign-in changes, are designed to simplify and streamline the experiences had by Sony Customers.

Sony also detailed PlayStation 5’s backward compatibility recently. While the feature works with nearly every PS4 game that was released, 10 specific games will not work on PS5. Regardless, it is nice to see another step taken by Sony to better the lives of their customers, though it will be interesting to see if it can roll out the update without any hiccups.
