[UPDATE: All PlayStation Network services have been restored on PS4. The original story follows.]

PlayStation Network is currently down for many users. According to the PlayStation Network service status page, the PS4 is the console that is currently experiencing the outage issues, with users unable to manage their accounts, launch games, launch apps, or use the console's other features, like PlayStation Now, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Music.

Sony has yet to indicate what is causing the outage, but it has assured fans that its engineers are working to resolve the current problems with the PlayStation Network. And unfortunately, there's no estimated time when PS4 owners can expect PlayStation Network features to be restored. Here's hoping that Sony is able to get the service back up and running sooner rather than later, especially since many gamers may have been looking forward to the weekend to get in some quality gaming.

While we're hoping this current outage doesn't last too long, whenever PSN goes down, there is some worry that it will be a drawn-out issue. Some fans may recall when PlayStation Network was down for a whopping 23 days back in 2011 after about 77 million PSN accounts were compromised.

Since the 2011 PlayStation Network outage, though, Sony has been far more consistent with providing a reliable online network for its users. PlayStation Network outages on the PS4 have been few and far between compared to some of the issues it had years ago, with a few notable outage periods.

One notable outage period for the PlayStation Network on PS4 was the 2014 DDoS attack that was carried out by the hacking group Lizard Squad. Lizard Squad targeted both PlayStation Network and other gaming services, like Xbox Live, around Christmas of 2014, so PSN definitely wasn't the only service compromised in that particular instance.

Those past outages lasted for extended periods of time, but as previously stated, Sony has been better about providing a reliable online network with the PS4, and there's no reason to think this one will last too much longer. We'll update this article once PSN services have been fully restored for all PlayStation 4 users.
