In just a little over a month Sony will be unleashing their magical light-up lollipop glow wand, the PlayStation Move, into the wild. With the exception of the newest SOCOM title, all the standard motion control genres have all been done before. Boxing, archery, tennis…been there done that. However, in a talk with CVG, Move mastermind Dr. Richard Marks said that the camera and controller combo would be great for another genre, real time strategy.
Dr. Marks even went so far as to say it could be better for RTS games than the mouse and keyboard. Let’s see just what the doctor ordered:
“It could play a PC RTS really well, but I think there is modifications on the RTS genre that will be really good with. I play a lot of RTS games but the way I think about it is you have a landscape below you with all the troops, and imagine you’re the general and you just want to look out over your troops and select guys – tell them to attack there.
I think that with Move would feel way better than a mouse for that, for example, and doing things that require some 3D information is much better with Move. The RTS genre has been designed not to require any 3D information, but having that extra dimension and all the angle data that we have too is also very interesting.”
Ok, before you PC die-hards go crazy and march off to burn this guy at the stake for such blasphemy, let’s look at what he’s really saying here. He’s not saying that Move is better than a keyboard and mouse for RTS titles in their current form. What he does seem to be saying is that with some changes to the way the games themselves play, the Move would be the ideal way to control these new types of RTS warfare.
While his vision for the genre isn’t actually novel, I’m sure we’ve all dreamed of a “point and direct” method of RTS control ever since Nintendo hit us with both the DS and the Wii, I’ll still be fairly interested to see if they can pull this off since we are still waiting for a great RTS on either of the aforementioned platforms. That said, it would seem that if any control method or platform is best suited to make any serious waves in the RTS genre, it’s multi-touch platforms and, for the moment, the iPad.
If Dr. Marks and the Move can come up with a solid game design that is best suited to overtake the RTS genre, I say bring it on, but what does the Rant Gallery say? Could the Move finally have the impact on the RTS genre that the Wii has thus far stalled on? Do you ever see yourself preferring a Move version to a PC version of an RTS, or are you just waiting for the iPad developers to get it together and wow us with great RTS apps?
The PlayStation Move…well…moves into retailers this September.
