With both Sony and Microsoft set to release next-gen consoles later this year, enthusiasm from fans is at an all-time high. But for many gamers, there is the question of which console to buy first, or at all.

According to a new survey, customer loyalty is highest with PlayStation fans with Xbox and then Nintendo fans trailing not far behind. It’s a survey that is likely to be making the rounds in the news sphere but one that is worth looking at more closely.

The Infographic Only Wants to Go Viral

First and foremost, the data comes from a long infographic distributed by BestSEOCompanies.Com. This is not a gaming publication or an organization associated with gaming; the site is focused on building SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

There are many different ways to do this, but one of the best is creating a post or piece of content that is highly shareable, like an infographic with some bold statements. In the case of this infographic, the focus is on brand loyalty between customers and a variety of companies, like McDonalds or Apple.

Survey Sample Size is Questionable

But building strong SEO is by no means a shameful endeavor and making content that is highly shareable isn’t either. Many small artists find success in creating incredible video game fan art. Things get more complicated when one looks at the fine print of the infographic’s data. According to the image, only 1,008 people were surveyed regarding these various topics.

So when the infographic claims that PlayStation is the gaming brand with the most customer loyalty, the sample size is hardly sufficient. 40% of people surveyed say that they prefer PlayStation, but with such a small sample size that’s only about 400 people. And Xbox and Nintendo are not looking bad at all with 31% and 30%. Had the survey been of 100,000 people, a 40% share would have looked more impressive. Instead, this information is meant to drum up a debate between console fans that are looking for any edge over their peers.

Who Participated in This Survey?

Beyond the pitiful sample size, there isn’t any information to indicate how the infographic came to this conclusion. What questions were asked? How does one determine brand loyalty? What if someone likes all video game platforms?

No doubt PlayStation fans are enthusiastic and excited about Sony’s content, but so are Xbox and Nintendo fans. Some might even argue that Nintendo fans are more loyal, since they have had to persist through disappointing eras like the Wii U’s.

Maybe a better survey will come around that helps make this information more clear, but this data is meaningless and the claim PlayStation customers are the most loyal has little evidence to support it. More people are going to buy the PS5 and Xbox Series X on Day 1 than participated in the survey.
