Massively Redesigned PlayStation Home Launches Today

PS Home Hub

It was first teased about 6 weeks ago in Game Rant’s weekly news roundup for September 25, and now, Sony has unveiled its new design for PlayStation Home, giving PS3 owners a massive (and welcome) update to say the least.

PSN users will be able to upgrade PS Home today, November 3. This enormous update integrates games, quests, community events and user-generated content, all the while providing players with additional navigation, shopping, socialization, and entertainment options.

The new PS Home will launch with a number of new, free-to-play games, such as:

  • Bootleggers ’29: Playing as your PS Home avatar, this unique, FPS takes place in the roaring 20’s in some of the seediest establishments one can imagine. Found in the Action District, it pits cops vs. criminals in a Prohibition-era game of Capture the Cask. It supports real-time multiplayer, vintage weapons (Tommy Guns? We can only hope!), and various rewards that players can unlock along the way.
  • PlayStation Home Hold ‘Em: Sit down at the backroom poker tables and test your skill and bluffing abilities as you try to conquer the table. Players can unlock features and collect prizes along the way as they try to prove their mettle and beat the best.
  • Pl ayStation Home Sports Trivia: Have a love for video games and sports? Players can test their knowledge of useless facts against the PS Home community and unlock themed rewards in this very large trivia game found in the Sportswalk. Over 10,000 questions are available initially.
  • RC Rally: Found in the new Pier Park, players can build and customize a remote controlled car and race against friends over multiple courses, performing stunts and tricks and unlocking numerous upgrades along the way.
  • Cogs: A 3D version of Lazy 8 Studios award-winning Steampunk puzzle game, Cogs can be found in PlayStation Home’s new Hub where players build a variety of machines from sliding tiles and unlock exclusive PlayStation Home rewards.

PS Home users will start at the Hub, which hosts a featured game front-and-center, an Activity Board that includes a robust questing and events system, as well as stores packed with games, personal spaces and avatar enhancements. After the Hub, there are genre-based districts which have even more exclusive content and games that are tailored to the players' interests. Here is what’s in store:

  • Action District: The meeting ground for hardcore gamers, this district has an urban feel reminiscent of some first-person shooters and provides a direct travel point to action and horror games. Visit the Action District at launch will allow players to play two classic PlayStation Home Total Game Integration events where they can unlock content in both Killzone 3 and Dead Island.
  • Sportswalk: The Sportswalk has the same feel as going to a sporting event in an urban setting with lots of activity and events taking place around it. The Sportswalk will have real-time sports scores from real teams and leagues, highlights and various sports-themed games.
  • Adventure District: At the launch of the PlayStation Home redesign, the Adventure District will present the Uncharted 3: Fortune Hunter total game integration event, providing a third-person adventure experience including a partial recreation of the Yemen level from Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception multiplayer mode and a cover-based shooting system complete with weapons and gameplay from the series. Players can unlock content that can be used in the Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Blu-Ray Disc game as well as additional PlayStation Home rewards.
  • Pier Park: A waterfront boardwalk leads players to carnival, puzzle, outdoor and arcade games. Players can ride on the ferris wheel or visit the arcade for more games.
  • PlayStation Home Theater: The PlayStation Home Theater sports an ultra-modern architectural design and hosts a wide range of videos programmed specifically for PlayStation gamers, including episodes of Pulse and Qore, trailers and interviews from the PlayStation Blog, and user-generated videos in the popular Community Theater.
  • PlayStation Home Mall: The all-new PlayStation Home Mall is loaded with thousands of pieces of content from some of the most popular game and entertainment IPs in the world. Shop for PlayStation Home games, extravagant personal spaces, costumes, clothing items and other avatar enhancements, and tons more in the redesigned Mall.

All told, PS Home has more than 230 ready-to-play games, over 10,000 virtual items, and new community events happening every day of the week. As a fairly underwhelmed user of the previous PS Home interface, I can honestly say that I am very excited to get into the new, redesigned PS Home and mix it up in the Poker and Sports Trivia games, among other things.
