PlayStation hires Veronica Rogers, Microsoft's former business developer and sales lead to a major position on its sales team. Rogers will play an important role at PlayStation, helping it not just to make money from sales of the PS5 but also from subscription services such as PlayStation Plus.

Rogers joins the PlayStation team as senior vice president of business operations after nearly 20 years at Dell Technologies and Microsoft, which is one of Sony's biggest competitors. In a statement, Rogers said that the PlayStation brand is "one of the most beloved in the world and I am excited to join a company that has such a passionate community, legendary history, and an amazing leadership team." PlayStation's new senior vice president also said that her "experience leading global sales organizations will help excel the PlayStation business and deliver the best gaming experiences to fans across the world."

For many gamers and PlayStation fans, it's Rogers past work at Microsoft that will raise eyebrows. However, what is more exciting is the suggestion that Sony really wants to grow PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now, two of the subscription services that Rogers will be working on in her role. Sales of the PS5 will be important to Sony, but it can make millions more by getting fans to spend on subscriptions to get free games, game streaming, and access to online multiplayer. The company changed PlayStation Now's pricing in October and has kept adding games to PlayStation Plus, but the hiring of Rogers could potentially grow the services.

Growing services and getting more digital sales will also be important to Sony as Microsoft drives ahead with its own subscription service plans. Microsoft seems to be doing well with Xbox Game Pass, the game subscription service which is offering games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and new Xbox exclusives like Gears 5. There are also game subscriptions such as Apple Arcade and the Google Play Pass and Sony will want to make sure that it isn't losing money to these other services.

Fans will likely know more about how Rogers' work is helping the PlayStation brand closer to the PS5's release as Sony reveals more about what its console can offer fans. What her hiring suggests now though is that Sony has big plans for the PS5 and the PlayStation brand and fans should get excited.
