Sony is bringing back PS4 DualShock 4 controller color variants this month, and they'll be available globally. It's unclear exactly why the company is opting to do this now, just a few short months before the release of the PS5, but it will surely be a treat for those wanting to get their hands on these previously discontinued color schemes.

The news came today from the PlayStation blog, during which Sony shared a video announcing the return of many recent controller colors. The Unleash Your Colors video shared by Sony showcases some of the many colors that controllers have taken on in the last seven years and some of what will be available this month.

Sony specifically calls out Berry Blue, Red Camouflage, Rose Gold, and Steel Black as colors that will be returning, but the video and the rest of the blog makes it seem as though this won't be it. Players will need to head to their local game store to see what's available later this month.

The video is a short 36 seconds, but shows off a number of the over 25 colors of PlayStation controllers. Sony does clarify that fans will need to check with local retailers to determine availability and price, but it seems that most retailers are selling the new colors for around $65. Many feel that this is too high given that the controllers are almost seven years old and the PS5 is right around the corner, but it remains to be seen how well the sales go.

People in the comment all seem to be pining for Alpine Green, which was not one of the explicitly listed controllers and doesn't show up in retailers after a quick google search. Others point out that since these controllers aren't supported on the PS5, it doesn't make sense to bring the colors back now. It's possible this is just Sony's way of clearing out inventory, but it seems more likely that Sony is banking on a large portion of players sticking with the PS4 for a while after the PS5 releases, as is evidenced by the State of Play focusing on PS4 games.

The PS4 still has some life left in it, so fans shouldn't expect everything to shift over to PS5 immediately. There are going to be a lot of players that can't afford to do so and rumors of a supply shortage of PS5s may also cause issues if they are true.
