Sony will be holding its annual Days of Play later this month, which means PlayStation owners can once again expect discounts on select software not just for the PlayStation 4 but the PlayStation 5 now as well. But the big focus for this year's community celebration is the PlayStation Player Celebration, a three week-long event that tasks the community with taking part in activities to earn exclusive prizes.
The way it works is that PlayStation players, be they on PS4 or PS5, can contribute to these community activities simply by playing games. Each week consists of a single stage, with the first beginning on May 18th, and the community must work together to hit certain targets to complete the stage. Namely, they must play a certain number of PS4/PS5 games (each game must be played for at least an hour to count) and earn a certain number of trophies (each player can only contribute a maximum of six).
So, for example, Stage One (which runs from May 18th to May 24th) requires 2.4 million games played and 7.2 million trophies earned. If the target is met in time, every contributing player will receive an exclusive PS4 dynamic theme and PSN avatar. Each stage also has a bonus goal which, if reached, will yield additional rewards like more avatars. What's more, if every goal is reached (not counting the bonus goals), anyone who participated every week will receive another exclusive PS4 theme and PSN avatar.
One interesting detail that needs mentioning is that PlayStation Plus isn't mandatory for entering or receiving rewards so nobody needs to worry about missing out. However, playing games with friends will earn players double points so having PS Plus is a bonus.
The one downside to the whole thing is that there are no special theme rewards for PS5 owners. Currently, the PS5 does not allow for custom themes and, so far, there are no plans to implement them. PS5 owners will not be able to claim the PS4 themes either for the PS5; they're only exclusive to the PS4.
It's at least good to know that people can take part regardless of which console they're using. It's been six months since the PS5 launched and it's still incredibly difficult to get hold of one. What's more, Sony has stated that the stock shortages could continue into 2022.
Aside from that, another sale is planned but Sony has yet to share any real details about it. And lastly, a free multiplayer weekend will take place later this month. Usually, PS Plus is required to access online multiplayer so this a great opportunity to take advantage of and could encourage more people to purchase a subscription.
