Sony Celebrates PlayStation And The Player in All-New Video

By | 3 years ago

Pow, right in the nostalgia. Sony’s latest look back at the lifetime of the PlayStation brand is all about celebrating the past, its players and their joypads. Having first donned a pair of rose-tinted specs for the fantastic, if ever-so slightly content-less PlayStation Memories trailer earlier this year, Sony appears to be dipping into the retro well once again with their latest effort – a brief biographical video entitled ‘#4ThePlayers since 1995.’

Set in a London flat, overlooking the city’s bustling business and retail districts,  ‘#4ThePlayers’ follows the lives of two avid English gamers, as they grow up alongside their console brand of choice. Stuffed full of British cultural references, from end-of-school signed shirts to rock bands Blur and Kasabian, the video also makes use of many American-friendly touchstones, including a wealth of classic games.

Featured titles include:

History of Gaming PS1

Aside from the multitude of hidden references scribbled across walls and poking out of half-opened cabinets, one of the single most interesting things about the entire video is the way in which it represents the shrinkage of our personal tech. While the final scene of the PlayStation 4 is deliberately left clutter free, in order to better sell the console’s “heightened sophistication,” retro nods to the likes of bulky VHS tapes, vinyl records, CRT TVs and old-school peripherals speak volumes about just how far home entertainment has come in the last 18 years.
