A recent patent could soon allow PlayStation cloud gaming to support VSync. The possibility of VSync coming to the console would be a big step for Sony and its attempts to improve PlayStation's cloud gaming.

With the increasing success of cloud gaming with Game Pass Ultimate for Xbox and PC, Sony has been working to increase traffic to its own cloud gaming platform, PlayStation Now. Recently, Sony has been filing patents in order to further its reach outside of consoles and potentially bring its cloud gaming to web browsers. Sony's vision of increasing traffic to its cloud gaming would require the company to offer gamers the best playing experience possible in order to steer its customers towards Playstation Now. One recent patent that Sony has applied for could eventually bring an interesting feature to Playstation Now that will make some gamers' ears perk up.

A patent filed by Sony would make it possible for PlayStation Now to support VSync, a feature that prevents screen tearing while playing. The patent specifically mentions in the title of syncing a VSync signal of one device to a VSync signal of another device. A feature like this would allow Sony's version of cloud gaming to have a setting that is generally helpful when it comes to a game's visual presentation. According to the patent, the application goes back to June of last year but just recently became published.

Although VSync can be a great feature to include in one's gaming experience, sometimes the setting doesn't work properly and can drop frame rates drastically. However, many gamers will be excited about the possibility of not having to worry about screen tearing when VSync is working as intended. With Sony already competing with Xbox with its PlayStation Plus subscription, this patent demonstrates how serious the company is about competing with cloud gaming as well.

Despite Sony and its PlayStation consoles being seemingly more popular than ever, there is always room for improvement and new frontiers to explore. It seems as though cloud gaming could be one of the next big things in gaming, and it only makes sense for the world's top gaming companies to file patents that would help get a leg up on the competition. Only time will tell if VSync will actually be implemented in PlayStation Now, but it's exciting to speculate on where Sony will choose to go in the future regarding its products.
