When Sony unveiled the PlayStation 5 at its Future of Gaming event in 2020, one of the very first games that it revealed alongside the new console was a stunning indie game called Stray where players take on the role of an orange cat. Stray immediately caught the Internet's attention, with many intrigued by the concept of a video game with cyberpunk aesthetics where the main character is a cat. And now the long wait to play Stray is nearly at an end.

Stray was featured at the latest PlayStation State of Play event, where fans were treated to a gorgeous gameplay trailer showing off the game's environments, exploration, and more. The trailer concluded by confirming that Stray's release date is July 19, at which point it will be available across PC, PS4, and PS5. It was also confirmed that those who are signed up for the more expensive PlayStation Plus tiers will be able to play it on day one at no extra charge.

Perhaps as a sign of things to come, Stray is going to be available day one to anyone that's signed up for PS Plus Extra or PS Plus Premium. For those who haven't been following the revamp that is on the way for Sony's PlayStation Plus subscription service, Sony is rolling out big changes to PS Plus that separates the service into three tiers: PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra, and PS Plus Premium. PS Plus Essential is the PS Plus service that fans know today, whereas PS Plus Extra basically combines PS Plus with PlayStation Now, and PS Plus Premium throws a bunch of retro games into the mix.

It was known that PS Plus Extra and Premium would have higher-profile games, but it wasn't clear that they would have day one releases. Assuming Stray isn't the last day one release that PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers can look forward to, then this could be a way for Sony to seriously compete with Xbox Game Pass. It will be interesting to see what happens, but for now, fans can look forward to Stray joining the lineup when it launches on July 19.

In the meantime, fans can check out the newest Stray trailer, which gives fans a look at the game's bizarre, visually-stunning world. As seen in previous trailers, Stray has cyberpunk aesthetics, but with the protagonist cat interacting with robots and utilizing advanced technology while exploring a futuristic city. It looks great, and fans will find out next month if it plays as good as it looks.

Stray launches July 19 for PC, PS4, and PS5.
