Rumor: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale 2 Announcement Leaks

Rumors are circulating that Sony may soon announce a sequel to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, a fighting game that stars characters from various franchises on the console. While clearly borrowing from the Super Smash Bros. style of gameplay that Nintendo made famous, PlayStation's take had plenty of original and fun mechanics to make it stand out, garnering its share of fans and earning strong reviews. Now, after nearly five years, a sequel may be on the horizon.

According to WWG, reports from an insider are indicating the PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale sequel could be announced some time later today, as a part of Sony's Paris Games Week presentation. The report also discloses a number of details about the game, including a list of playable characters, stages, modes, and even a full list of moves for two of the characters. Keep in mind that none of this has been confirmed by Sony itself.

According to this alleged insider, the game will feature these characters in its demo:

  • Kratos (God of War)
  • PaRappa (PaRappa the Rapper)
  • Crash Bandicoot (Crash Bandicoot)
  • Spyro the Dragon (Spyro the Dragon)
  • Ratchet & Clank (Ratchet & Clank)
  • Nathan Drake (Uncharted)
  • Aloy (Horizon: Zero Dawn)
  • Morgana (Persona 5)
  • Noctis (Final Fantasy XV)

Oddly enough, there are rumors within the rumor, which say these characters might also join: Lammy from Um Jammer Lammy, Dante from Devil May Cry, Klanoa from Klonoa, and an unnamed Yakuza character.

Out of all of the characters on the list, Morgana and Noctis are the least plausible. Sony would have to secure the rights from Atlus and Square Enix, respectively, and the popularity of those characters would make for tough negotiations. Furthermore, Final Fantasy 15 is not a PlayStation exclusive, which makes Noctis' inclusion somewhat illogical.

The report also lists a handful of stages that are supposedly part of the game:

  • Mementos (Persona 5)
  • Wumpa Island (Crash Bandicoot)
  • PlayStation Arena
  • Tearaway Stage

As for modes, the insider says Arcade Mode, Online Mode, and a whole set of unlockables will be in the game. If the report is to be believed, the title is being developed at Game Arts, with consultants from SuperBot. There was a job posting for positions at SuperBot a while back that many speculated was for this very gamePerhaps there was was truth to those rumors, after all.

It's been nearly five years since the title was released on Sony's previous console, so it's reasonable to assume the company has been eyeing PlayStation All-Stars for the PlayStation 4, but the company has not publicly stated anything on the matter. Hopeful fans will just have to monitor Paris Games Week to see if these rumors are true. We'll keep you updated as the event unfolds.
