The PlayStation 5 reveal event injected tons of new details about the console out into the wild, most importantly the PlayStation 5's console design. However, the revamped design will be coming with a vastly overhauled user interface, according to a now-deleted LinkedIn thread posted by Matt MacLaurin, Sony's VP of UX Design.

The thread, first reported by The Verge, stated that the PlayStation 5 will feature a "100 percent overhaul of the PS4 UI and some very different new concepts." The aim is still a "practical first" approach, but if the PlayStation 5 startup screen, which Sony has officially revealed, is any indicator, fans should be getting a much more elegant redesign of what's currently available.

According to MacLaurin, the PS5 UI is "more subtle and flashy, but no pixel is untouched." Perhaps the most interesting thing revealed in the thread is that the hardware will be "customizable in ways previous gens weren't," though MacLaurin doesn't appear to have offered additional details about what that means.

And while nothing definitive was stated, MacLaurin did state that the PlayStation 5 in black was a "maybe." Fans have been split on the PS5's two-toned white and black design, so the possibility of another jet black console will certainly be appealing to some. Special edition consoles are fairly common, and it stands to reason that Sony would release an all-black version if the demand is there.

As evidenced by how PlayStation start screen's evolution since the original, the new PlayStation 5 UI may have major implications for how fans perceive the console. The PS5 is meant to be evocative of the future, and it does achieve that, but it will need a matching interface to drive that home.

This shows yet another split in the strategy of the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5. The Xbox Series X will likely use the same UI as the Xbox One, though more refinements will be made over time, like with the new Xbox Store UI. While that will keep it familiar with fans, Xbox's UI has faced some criticism, despite repeated overhauls.

The PlayStation 5 is predicted to outsell the Xbox Series X, though both consoles have their perks, and things could change. There are still plenty of unknowns about the next-gen systems, too, so there's no telling what the next few months hold for Sony or Microsoft. That being said, with the PS5 now revealed, fans can expect more information about both consoles to start coming out soon.
