Sony's "Future of Gaming" livestream was a highly-anticipated event, and when it got delayed in solidarity with ongoing Black Lives Matter protests that announcement became the most-liked gaming Tweet of all time. The big video game showcase and console reveal had an impressive payoff to justify that anticipation, with Esports Charts reporting the event peaked with nearly 7.3 million viewers.

Esports Charts, a service that analyzes trends in esports events and streaming in general, says there were 10,628,719 hours of content watched for the PS5 event alone. Its viewer count includes over 1.1 million people who watched the pre- and post-shows held by The Game Awards creator Geoff Keighley as part of his Summer Game Fest that was hosted live through YouTube Gaming.

Between months of anticipation around the PS5 following Microsoft's already-revealed Xbox Series X, the cancellation of live events such as E3 due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the host of games Sony announced during its event, it makes sense that the livestream garnered as much traffic as it did. People are still talking about it, and social media is full of hilarious memes based on the console's design that some feel looks like anything from a Wi-Fi router to a white coat with the collar popped.

There are plenty of other good reasons why the PS5 could be found all over the Internet following Sony's event as well, notably its line-up of games. Between a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, a new Ratchet & Clank, a follow-up to Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man, Resident Evil 8, and a remake of Demon's Souls with new game modes, there are a lot of things for prospective fans to look forward to.

That said, a lot is still on the table in regards to Sony's next-generation console. While it was revealed that there will be a second version of the PS5 for those who only want to play games digitally and that the console will come with accessories like a camera and a controller charging station, the price of the PlayStation 5 was not discussed during the stream.

Even without that key detail the event clearly still served its intended purpose of hyping up the gaming community. The success of the livestream in viewership alone says a lot, and PlayStation boss Jim Ryan has teased more PS5 reveals will be coming soon for anyone who is still on the fence about buying one.
