Throughout the last couple of months, Sony has repeatedly stated that the coronavirus pandemic won’t affect the launch of the PlayStation 5, despite everything else that has been delayed because of it, and the latest official word from the company on the matter is no different.

In a financial report released today, the company acknowledged the impact COVID-19 has had on it, touching upon how its business has been affected by temporary shutdowns of its manufacturing plants in China, Malaysia, and the UK, as well as factors like “employees working from home and restrictions on international travel” that have “presented some challenges in regards to part of the testing process and the qualification of production lines.”

However, these hardware setbacks evidently weren’t enough to derail Sony’s plans for the PS5 debuting this year, as it stated that “development is progressing” and the console is still on track to launch during the 2020 holiday season. So at the very least, PlayStation fans shouldn’t have to worry about the console’s launch falling into 2021 or later.

It also sounds like they won’t have to worry about not getting new games on the console, because Sony confirmed that software development for its first-party studios and partner studios have seen “no major problems” as of the report’s publishing. That doesn’t necessarily mean none of its upcoming games won’t see any sort of delay, but it does suggest any delays that do occur won’t be major.

There are a few things that Sony didn’t touch upon, though, like how the coronavirus situation may affect the PS5’s price. This has been a point of major speculation in light of the supply shortages brought on by the aforementioned manufacturing shutdowns, and while Sony is confident that its hardware pipeline is largely back on track, many are concerned that these shortages will result in higher costs for the PS5’s components, which in turn could lead Sony to raise the PS5’s price higher than expected to make up for those costs.

There’s also the question of when exactly the PS5 will launch. Sony has yet to specify exactly when in the holiday season the console will launch, though plenty of rumors have attempted to do so, with the most recent suggesting the PS5 may launch as soon as October. Of course, only time will tell if that ends up being the case.

The PlayStation 5 is scheduled to launch this holiday season.
