There were rumors abound in the weeks leading up to CES 2020, as Sony was set to take the stage for its press conference at the annual show. Last week, the largest rumor was that Sony would reveal the PS5, its next generation gaming console, on the main stage during its press conference. The company had teased that some sort of announcement would happen at CES 2020, complete with the foreboding tagline of ‘the future is coming.’

While the company was technically telling the truth, the future has yet to be revealed just yet. While Sony did not finally unveil what the PlayStation 5 actually looks like or any concrete details about its specs or capabilities, the company did officially reveal the logo it will use moving forward. The logo, as many PlayStation fans could have probably guessed, looks almost exactly like one might expect it to.

Admittedly, it is not all too shocking that Sony decided against finally revealing the PS5 on its CES stage. Sony is mainly known to reveal other non-gaming related hardware during its CES conference, like TVs or cameras. However, it is noteworthy that Sony spared a fair bit of time to touch on its gaming hardware and how the company has been fairing in the gaming landscape.

At its CES conference, Sony revealed the logo for the next generation console alongside some impressive milestones it's hit inside the gaming industry. Sony announced that the company had sold over 5 million VR units since the product launched during the last quarter of 2016. Sony also revealed that the PS4 surpassed 104 million units sold, giving the PS4 the title of second best-selling video game console in history. The console currently holding first place is Sony’s second generation console the PS2.

Rumors have been circulating about the PS5 for quite a while now, but they’ve reached a fever pitch following Microsoft announced the Xbox Series X at the 2019 Game Awards. For example, it’s rumored that PS5 will be backward compatible with every prior PlayStation console, even having enhanced visuals with past games.

Another rumor that has recently made its rounds is that the PS5 features controller backward compatibility. Meaning, there is a chance that the PS5 may be backward compatible with the DualShock 4 controller. This could potentially cut costs from a next generation console purchase, for those who don’t want to bankrupt themselves at the console’s launch. It’s worth mentioning that the PS5’s price tag has yet to be revealed as well.

Finally, fans do have a basic idea of what the next generation console could look like. Pictures of PS5 dev kits have surfaced around the internet, showcasing a fairly unconventional design. Additionally, PS5 prototype controllers have leaked, showcasing a bulkier design than the current DualShock 4 controllers.

While Sony did reaffirm the holiday 2020 release date for the PS5, that was only solid information the company revealed at its CES conference aside from the official logo reveal. Most likely, Sony will wait to unveil the new console on a stage that they have full precedence over, like a State of Play presentation or something like it. Until then, PlayStation fans will have to keep their ears to the ground about Sony’s next generation of hardware.
