Despite a global shortage of parts and components, Sony announced that it has sold 20 million units of the PlayStation 5 console worldwide since its launch in November 2020. Recent reports of Sony's production and performance show that demand for the console is still very high, ushering in a need to increase supply and quicken the production of the PS5 as much as possible.

Veronica Rogers, head of Global Sales and Business Operations at the company, states her gratitude to the fans: "Since PS5's launch, our teams have worked tirelessly to deliver a truly next-gen gaming console that has won the world over and we want to take this time to thank the fans for their support. Your passion for the PlayStation brand is what drives us and what inspires us to innovate new technology, engineer the future of gaming, and continue creating the best place to play." It is encouraging for fans to hear such sincere gratitude and also reassuring to hear that a company is truly committed to creating the best possible experience because of and for them.

Rogers also goes on to state that Sony is planning a "significant ramp-up" in PS5 console production, which will, hopefully, be able to deliver the console to more homes and families during this year's holiday season. In a recent report, Sony has also come out to say that "PS5 (during its first full financial year) took 82 minutes to sell 80,000 consoles, while it took nine days for PlayStation 4 over a comparable period," and if that is any indication about how the console will fare in the years to come, it seems that the PS5 has a bright future.

The huge demand for the PS5 console is a fantastic problem for Sony to have. It is fantastic because it signifies the release of a successful console and games that are keeping fans engaged and entertained, but it is a problem because the global shortage of parts and components and other supply chain issues are causing production to move at a slower pace than the company would have hoped. However, it seems that Sony is taking the time to assuage fears of delay and unavailability in the fans, who are approaching the holiday season with the PS5 at the top of their wish list.

With fans keeping a weather eye on restocks at different retailers, combined with PS5 scalpers reselling the console online at exorbitantly spiked prices, it has created a culture of unavailability surrounding the console's existence in the market over the last year. So this news from Sony is reassuring fans that the PS5 console will, hopefully, be more readily available to purchase soon.

It is true that things like parts shortages and supply chain issues are unpredictable, volatile phenomena that can come up at any time, an official report from Sony that expects production of the PS5 to increase is heartening to fans hoping to get their hands on the coveted gaming console this year.
