The PlayStation 3 is really the ideal multipurpose gaming system. Sony's shiny video game console is so much more than meets the eye. It offers a fully functioning Blu-ray player, free-to-play online gaming, a way to download and play all your favourite games from the original PlayStation, and a ton of Grade-A titles exclusive to the console.
Of course, there are so many great games that came out this year, and it becomes a bit tricky trying to figure out which ones are worthy of putting on your wish list or buying for someone. Thank goodness you have us!
We've taken time out of our busy schedules in order to bring you our top game recommendations for the PlayStation 3. It was a pretty painstaking task, so you're welcome. Check out this year's Holiday musts for the PS3 right below.
Sony's 3rd home console has some stiff competition this year, but anyone would be foolish to overlook the PS3. There are some truly awesome game series such as Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, and God of War that can only be found on this system, but the fact that the PS3 also has a built-in Blu-ray player can do nothing but bump up the console's demand this Holiday season.
PlayStation 3 160GB Console w/ Uncharted 2 & Medal of Honor (Bonus: Extra Controller)
This bundle is exclusive to Walmart and is one of the best deals out on the marketplace without a doubt. For $339 players will receive Uncharted 2, winner of multiple Game of the Year Awards, and Medal of Honor, the latest controversial shooter from the guys at EA and DICE. Not only do you get those enjoy playing those games, but you'll get another controller so you can enjoy them with more than just one person. There is also a $10 movie credit for Vudu, but that's not really the selling point for this package.
PlayStation 3 320GB Console w/ Move Bundle
If you're looking for an HD console package that comes with something to get yourself or hefty loved ones off the couch then the PlayStation 3 system with Move bundle may be just what you're looking for. Unlike the previously mentioned console, this package is available pretty much everywhere and comes packaged with Sony's new motion gaming peripheral the Move. The bundle also includes the title Sports Champions so you'll be able to play with your shiny new Move right out of the box!
PlayStation 3 Games
Consoles are great but it's really all about the software for the hardware, baby. There are literally tons of great games this year that any PS3 owner would be extremely satisfied to receive, but that's a blessing just as much as it is a curse. Fortunately, Game Rant is awesome and has decided to help you out a little bit, so you can check out our list of must-own PS3 games of 2010 on page 2.
God of War 3
This one is pretty obvious, so we had to get it out of the way first. God of War 3 is a continuation of Kratos's struggle for revenge against the gods of Olympus who betrayed him. The game has tons of enemies to shred, hidden objects to find, and it is all rendered with some of the best visuals that can be found on any console. If you own a PS3 then you likely already own this game, but if for some reason you've yet to purchase it then we recommend adding it to your collection this Holiday season.
ModNation Racers is a lot more than just a quirky little racing game. The level of customization found in ModNation borders on ridiculous and the different races throughout the story can become surprisingly difficult. There are tons of new cars, racers and more for players to unlock. There's also a ton of free downloadable content and a large portion of it is made by other players around the world. All of the content and unlockables only add to the game's lifespan and will appeal to gamers of all ages.
Gran Turismo 5
Many were probably starting to think the Gran Turismo 5 was becoming the next Duke Nukem Forever, but it only recently hit store shelves for everyone to finally enjoy. The racing sim lives up to what is to be expected from the legendary series and has over 1,000 different vehicles to unlock and drive with. There are also tons of awesome tracks to race on, and if you ever get bored of the many tracks included then you can make your own with the game's new 'Course Maker' mode. Racing fans have been waiting for this game for a long time for this game.
There are few games that can live up to the cerebral thrill ride that is Heavy Rain. The game will cast you in several different throughout the story, but they all seem to be tied to one main objective to find the Origami Killer. The Origami Killer is a serial murderer who leaves little folded slits of paper with the bodies of his victims, and the only thing scarier than this extremely intelligent mass murder happens to be the game's extremely beautiful graphics. They are easily the best graphics in a PS3 game, and the fact that it's an emotionally engaging game only adds to the fact that you need to own this game.
The Sly Collection
Way back on the PlayStation 2 there was a series called Sly Cooper. The games starred a raccoon by the same name who would go on missions to avenge his deceased family members and of course make some serious coin... err steal it rather. The Sly Collection offers all three of the games originally released on the PS2, but this time they are all remastered, some mini-games support Move, and the third Sly is in 3D! If you've never played a Sly Cooper game then you may want to catch up now before the 4th one inevitably releases.
MLB 10: The Show
Sports is always an easy genre to buy for. If someone likes hockey then you buy them a hockey game, but MLB 10: The Show isn't just appealing to fans of MLB. The highest rated baseball franchise makes its return with MLB 10: The Show with new features like the 'Home Run Derby' and 'All-Stars Future Game'. There are also a new Online Season Leagues so that you and you're friends can play together and try to accumulate better stats then each other. If you're looking for sports game then look no further than MLB 10: The Show exclusively on the PS3.
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Ubisoft's latest extension of the Assassin's Creed lineage, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, is easily the best one yet. The game's main story re-introduces the player with the assassin from Assassin's Creed 2. Ezio is attacked by the Templars and he loses everything he holds dear to him, but he's not alone. Ezio must get a group of other highly lethal assassins together to strike back at the Templar Order and avenge his slain family. After you've managed to get through the lengthy campaign you can head online and play some multiplayer with your friends. This is the first time an Assassin's Creed has brought multiplayer to your home console and it's a gargantuan amount of fun.
Call of Duty: Black Ops
The annual blockbuster franchise has returned again with Call of Duty: Black Ops. This year it's World at War creator Treyarch's turn at bat and they've hit a home run. Black Ops offers an interesting story, which isn't common for the series, and the same multiplayer that everyone loves with some added tweaks. There are also wager matches that will allow you to put money you earn on the line in an attempt to win back even more. Zombie mode also makes its triumphant return which many fans will obviously be happy with.
Red Dead Redemption
Rockstar, the creators of infamous series such as Grand Theft Auto and... Rockstar Table Tennis have created yet another runaway hit called Red Dead Redemption. Players go back in time to the days of the wild west and land firmly in the cattle hyde boots of John Marston. The ex-gang member will be forgiven for all of his crimes if he is able to track down all of his old friends and either capture or kill them. The government has both his wife and son in their custody and John won't be able to see them until he's completed his missions. Steal horses or tie women to rail road tracks, the West is yours in this open-world cowboy game.
Move Sports Champions Bundle
Motion gaming is all the rage these days, and it was only a matter of time before Sony took the plunge into the mainstream trend. Lucky for yourself and all PS3 owners they've done so just in time for the Holidays. The Sports Champions Bundle comes packaged with a copy of Sports Champions, the PlayStation Eye camera, and a Move wand. If you already own a PS3 and want to experience motion gaming then this is the package to do it with.
PlayStation Network Games
Retail games are great and everything, but sometimes you just want to play a quick game without getting off your couch. That's where PSN games come into play (literally)! There are literally dozens and dozens of games available via the PSN service, but there are only a few truly great games. We narrowed the long list down to three games that are must-owns, so you can judge for yourself and let us know how we did.
Castle Crashers may have been crashing castles since its release on the XBLA two years ago, but the game has only hit the PSN this year. The game plays like an RPG with an absurd amount of humour and is incredibly addictive, but the best part about the game is that you and up to three friends can go on an epic adventure. Level your knight up, unlock new abilities, and pwn enemies with your magic powers. The PSN version also has exclusive content over the 360 version. See those two years were totally worth the wait.
Remember back in the good old days when you use to rock out to Excitebike on your NES? Wouldn't it be nice to relive those golden years with an updated version of that beloved franchise? Well you can if you own a Wii, but for those who don't this game is a good (if not better) option. Joe Danger is all about defeating other racers while simultaneously pulling off some pretty insane tricks. Your friends can also get in on the action if they feel so inclined, and there's really nothing more satisfying then beating three of your friends while simultaneously doing an insane trick.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is a nod to all old-school side-scrolling beat 'em ups and has tons of features that any fan of the comics and movie will be pretty happy with. The game follows the story of Scott Pilgrim as he sets out to fight and defeat his newest love interest's seven evil ex-boyfriends. The best part about this game is that up to three other friends can join you on the couch to help make the endless hordes of enemies seem a little less endless. Kick some butt, level up, defeat Gidian, and get the girl -- sounds simple enough.
That ends Game Rant's 2010 Holiday Guide for the PS3 Gamer, and we think we did a pretty damn good job. We didn't list every title that's worth picking up but we feel we got the best of the bunch. If you disagree or have some other great titles worth mentioning then post some comments below and give the rest of our readers some Holiday gift ideas. Now we have Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 Holiday Gift Guides, so using logic it's easy to deduce that the Wii is next.
Thanks for reading and have a Happy Holiday!
