Later this year, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will be released on Xbox One. The game made a splash when it launched on PC in March, and is one of the biggest games releasing on Xbox One this year.

However, according to a new interview, developer Bluehole is already planning to release the game on PS4. Speaking to Bloomberg, the founder of Bluehole, Chang Byung-gyu (who owns 20% of the company) revealed that the developer had held talks with all of the “major console companies” about bringing the game to consoles. Although Microsoft is publishing PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Xbox One as part of an increased partnership with Bluehole, the report states that “Bluehole is in talks with Sony about introducing a version for the PlayStation after that”.

The news may not come as a surprise to many fans, as speculation about PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds future release plans has been ongoing since the Xbox One version was announced. When asked about the exclusivity in August, Microsoft released a statement calling it a “console launch exclusive,” which prompted more questions about whether the game was only a timed exclusive deal. Byung-gyu’s comments are just a confirmation of what many were already thinking.

The next point of debate is who will be publishing the game. Microsoft may be handling publishing duties on Xbox One, but Bluehole will be looking for a publishing partner for the PS4 version. It’s unclear whether those discussions with Sony include plans for the PS4 platform holder to take care of the publishing duties, and how the developer (and the PS4 version) might benefit from that partnership.

Another question is just how successful PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds can be on the Sony console. Battlegrounds has sold over 10 million copies on PC so far, and there is clearly massive interest in the battle royale game. But will the hype for it have died down by the time it becomes available to PS4 players?

Battlegrounds is also one of several games now offering battle royale gameplay, too. Epic Games’ Fortnite recently introduced its Battle Royale game mode, and is available for free on PS4 right now. Grand Theft Auto Online has also helped to fill that battle royale void with one of its new Adversary modes. So, it will be interesting to see whether Bluehole’s game can overcome that and become a massive success on all three platforms of PC, Xbox One, and PS4).

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is out now for PC, and will release later in 2017 for Xbox One.
