Similarly to games like Overwatch, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds receives free content updates that are available to all players, with the game's continued development supported through cosmetic loot boxes. Loot boxes, or "crates" as they are called in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, are purchased through the in-game store using Battle Points (BP), which players earn by playing the game.

The amount of BP players earn at the end of a match in PUBG is determined based on three things: how much damage was inflicted to enemy players, how long players survived in the match, and how many kills they earned. The most BP is earned by winning matches, but since there are 99 other players all vying for the top spot, it's not realistic to expect to win all the time.

Therefore, those that want to farm for BP may want to focus on kills and damage instead of lasting as long as possible. Obviously, the best case scenario is that players will kill a lot of enemy players and last until the final parts of the game, but that's not always going to be possible.

Players going for kills should drop into highly populated areas on the map. While players can drop out of the plane and land anywhere on the map, areas that are named are more likely to have players, as they also tend to have the best loot in each match. The direction the plane is going is also important, as the areas it will fly over will be different every time, so players should take note of the most significant areas they will pass over at the beginning of the match.

This way, players should be able to maximize the amount of BP they earned in every PUBG match and increase their chances of earning some of the game's most valuable cosmetic items. However, they should keep in mind that loot boxes become more expensive every time you buy one, with their price resetting every week. Considering this, it's smarter to save up BP instead of purchasing more expensive loot boxes.

Something else to be mindful of is the ongoing loot box controversy that is plaguing the game industry. Thanks to Star Wars Battlefront 2, lawmakers the world over are investigating loot boxes, and there is a very real possibility that the sale of games with loot boxes will be restricted. If such legislation is passed, players can expect games like PUBG to completely overhaul their microtransaction system in the future.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is available now on PC and on Xbox One through the Game Preview program.
