PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has managed a staggering achievement, crossing 10 million sales. South Korean developer Bluehole announced the achievement early this morning, revealing that PUBG had attained the 8-digit sales number as of September 1. Launching March 23 in Steam Early Access, PUBG has reached in less than six months what most games will never accomplish. And going by the numbers, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds sales are showing no sign of slowing.
Going by early sales numbers reported by Bluehole, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds reached the first million sales within 3 weeks of launch. 4 million sales arrived in just three months. And just 15 days ago, Brendan Greene, PlayerUnknown himself, revealed the game had garnered 8 million total sales prior to gamescom. Sales are only speeding up for what’s quickly becoming 2017’s most surprising hit.
Helping to keep PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds sales rising is its availability in many regions. 19 countries, including China and South Korea, are highly active for the online multiplayer game. PUBG only being available digitally makes it extremely easy for regions where retail availability can often be constrained to buy and play. Its worldwide availability has allowed for its viral success to result in immediate, extreme sales numbers.
The harder question to answer is just how PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds managed to do it. There are many hugely successful video games, but are any of them comparable to what PUBG has done on a single platform, in Early Access, in such a fast amount of time? The concept of a multiplayer battle royale game has been done prior, but there’s no arguing that PUBG has delivered on player expectations in a way no game has previously. But that alone can’t be the whole story.
Which begs the question, how much of a role did livestreaming play in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds‘ success? PUBG has managed to overtake the most popular games on Twitch, League of Legends, Hearthstone, and Overwatch, handily. And the current most popular PUBG Twitch streamer, Shroud, went from around 5,000 subscribers to over 20,000 in just a few weeks after retiring from competitive Counter Strike. Of course, PUBG‘s livestreaming success may be a result of the game’s success and not vice versa. Publishers have known that livestreaming is great marketing for some time now, but who would have expected this kind of success from a game like PUBG?
Whatever the reason, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds‘ 10 million in sales is an incredible achievement and may only be the start of the game’s success. Expect to hear more about the game’s sales hitting even higher milestones in the months to come.
