A new PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds blog update detailed the changes coming to the game's test servers for PC, which will include two new loot crates for players to purchase.

In the blog update, the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds development team released information regarding the changes coming to the loot crate system. In the test servers, they are testing out the DESPERADO loot crate, which will only be unlockable using keys on the Steam market.

Along with the DESPERADO crate, the BIKER crate will be available in-game and will be free to open like previous loot crates. Both new crates have a drop rate of 40% each, while the previous two crates, Wanderer and Survivor, have been lowered to 10% each. At this time, it is currently unknown if these changes will be altered before going live to the full release of the game, or if they will ever come to the Xbox One version of the game.

Previously, PUBG players could purchase and open loot crates using BP, which was earned for simply playing the game, and the amount earned was much higher if the player won a match. The BIKER crate is the easiest free option for players to get, but there is no guarantee that when players redeem their BP that they will get the BIKER crate, or any free crate at all in their six crates per week.

This change is similar to what other loot crate games have done in the past, namely Team Fortress 2 and Counter Strike: Global Offensive, both of which require keys from the Steam market to open their loot crates. This new system could cause more controversy over loot boxes being considered gambling, since players have a significantly higher chance to earn the DESPERADO loot crate which would have to be unlocked using one of the purchasable keys.

Because the drop rate of these crates is so high, it may cause a lot of frustration for players seeking specific items. The rarest item in the DESPERADO set is a leopard print mask, which has a drop rate of 0.16%, which means that it would cost a great deal of money, or phenomenal luck, to get this rare item.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available now for PC and on Xbox One through the Game Preview program.
