Playdead, the studio behind the morbid puzzle-platformers Inside and Limbo, has been relatively silent about its next project. The studio has only released a few screenshots of its next game in tweets, the most recent one dating back to a year ago and older ones being released two years ago. At least, it appeared that way, as it now seems that Playdead has been sneaking screenshots of its upcoming sci-fi game into job listings on the developer's website.

The images first popped up in May on Resetera, though additional screenshots have surfaced since then. The game appears to be yet another puzzle platformer, though this time it has a distinct science-fiction flavor, with the main character appearing to be an astronaut. Fans of the developer's previous work should feel right at home, as the new game appears to share the same dark themes, but with much more impressive backdrops than we've seen previously.

In some ways, the images look like they could be a 2D version of Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding. And while one can only dream of a Kojima x Playdead crossover, the screenshots are still exciting.

Hiding screenshots in job listings is a very Playdead thing to do, though it is interesting that the studio went this route without making any real announcements. Still, it's a smart method of guerrilla marketing, and will likely generate more buzz than simply releasing the screenshots in a press release would have.

It'll be interesting to see how the next game takes shape. Both Limbo and Inside have been nominated for awards and even taken home quite a few. Whether or not the next game will manage to maintain that level of quality remains to be seen, but it certainly is exciting to see the developer begin teasing the next project like this.

In the meantime, players looking to get familiar with the developer before this new game releases currently have a convenient opportunity to do so, as Inside is one of the Xbox free Games with Gold for July 2019.

Playdead's next game does not have a title or release date.
