Microsoft Flight Simulator is one of those video games that has actually been around quite a bit longer than some people might realize. In fact, the earlier versions of the game predate the Xbox, let alone the Xbox Series X by a couple of decades. Of course, now that it's officially on the newest console, more people than ever before are getting their hands on the game really can make it feel as though a player is flying around the world. In order to really feel as though someone is in the cockpit, there is one controller that should be used over all others. Those who are trying to get the real simulation experience should ditch the Xbox controller and pick up one of the many yoke systems that are available.

The yoke systems built explicitly for Microsoft Flight Simulator are built to look and feel like the real steering wheel and some of the control panel in a plane. These controllers are geared towards syncing up with the game in a way that sets it apart from other controllers and games. The system is more than just a steering wheel that is built to look like what players see in a cockpit: There are also switches that control different parts of the digital plane in order to get a real feel for what pilots have to do in order to take even the smallest craft puddle jumping around the US.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Begs For Realism

While it's true that some games with the appendage "simulator" are, in fact, not built for the most realistic experience, Microsoft Flight Simulator is all about realism. This isn't a game where people are going to get their plane to take off and then enter into firefights with alien invaders. The point of the game is to feel as though users really are cruising the skies above either their home, or some exotic locale.

In order to do this, the game tries to make people feel like real pilots. Picking up an Xbox controller when the screen is showing a user taking their Microsoft Flight Simulator plane or — soon helicopter — from New York to Paris does undercut the realism. Any tiny bit to add to the realism of this game should be taken advantage of by users who want the full experience.

Yoke Systems For Microsoft Flight Simulator

There is one drawback when it comes to the yoke systems out there for Microsoft Flight Simulator: There is no doubt that these things can get pretty expensive. There are some out there, with all the bells and whistles that can run upwards of $1,000.

It's going to be up to each player whether or not they want to spend even a couple of hundred dollars for the cheaper versions of those systems. For those who were waiting for the game to land on the Xbox Series X, because they wanted to feel as though they really were a pilot, getting the kind of steering control and switches that allow users to feel as though they're in the captain's chair is going to be a must.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is available now for both the PC and Xbox Series X
