Plants vs. Zombies 2 finally has a release date. The popular PC and mobile game that has sucked literally thousands of hours of players’ time will finally get a follow-up this July.

While we don’t have any official details regarding Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time, gamers can bet on two things: more plants and more zombies. By that, we mean new plant and zombie types for players to protect their homestead and to fight off, respectively.

Last August, developer PopCap Games announced Plants vs. Zombies 2 for the first half of 2013, but that apparently didn’t pan out. Now, as revealed by PopCap’s Community Manager Stephanie Bayer, the game will hit digital storefronts in July.

While Plants vs. Zombies hasn’t achieved the type of ubiquitous cult status that Angry Birds has, it’s still one of the top names in the Tower Defense genre. Some might even argue that by using plants and zombies, PopCap made a more approachable Tower Defense game.

And as a result, the game has become extremely popular amongst hardcore and casual gamers. Don’t believe us? Check out PopCap’s Plants vs. Zombies 2 announcement video, which is filled with a few recognizable faces:

Currently, PopCap has not announced any platforms for Plants vs. Zombies 2, but it’s a safe bet to assume their plans include the PC, Mac, and mobile devices. It might not be a concurrent launch in July, but by the end of the year we wouldn’t be surprised if the game was available on every game-playing device under the sun.

It’s been a big day for Electronic Arts (owner of PopCap Games) who announced The Sims 4, Plants vs. Zombies 2, and that they acquired the exclusive licensing rights to the Star Wars IP from Disney. With so many popular titles already announced by the publisher, one has to wonder what they are saving for E3 2013. Oh, that’s right. There’s a new console generation coming soon.

Are you excited for Plants vs. Zombies 2? How would you like to see PopCap mix up the core gameplay formula?
