More PlanetSide 2 Players Heading

The Guinness World Records and video games are no strangers: in fact, it feels as though a new game breaks or sets an existing record every few months, making such a feat seem less and less impressive as time goes by. Despite that, there's just something about video games setting a world record that piques the interest, even when it's an incredibly specific one, like Far Cry 4 being played atop a mountain for over an hour, or something related to sales, like Grand Theft Auto V.

Surprisingly, today's game that joins the Guinness World Records, PlanetSide 2, has set a quite simple record. Back in 2011, Minecraft set a world record (among others) for the most people in a single Minecraft world, and PlanetSide 2 is taking the same approach.

It's a very recent accomplishment, which was set up and completed on Saturday, January 24, 2015. Sony Online Entertainment and PlanetSide community site PlanetSideBattles teamed up to break the previous record for the 'Most Players Online in A Single FPS Battle.' The pair of groups succeeded by bringing together 1,158 players from the game's three empires - Terran Republic, Vanu Sovereignty and New Conglomerate. The last title to hold this record was Man vs. Machine, which crammed 999 people into one battle in 2012.

David Carey, producer for PlanetSide 2, expressed excitement over the achievement, as well as the fact that the MMO managed to take the title back. According to Carey, the first PlanetSide was the original record holder:

"PlanetSide held the original record for this achievement and we're thrilled to have officially taken it back with PlanetSide 2. It's truly the players that define the game and we'd like to extend a BIG congratulations to our players for reaching such an accomplishment nearly every night, as well as thank them for making PlanetSide 2 exactly the type of experience it was meant to be."

Annie Nguyen, Video Games Records Manager at GWR, pointed to the new record as proof of how dedicated the PlanetSide community is:

"This amazing achievement shows not only how truly massive the PlanetSide 2 universe is, but also how inclusive its online community is. This title truly embodies the international, record-breaking spirit of Guinness World Records."

If the game's new achievement has some of you interested in checking out the game, you can buy it for free on PC at the game's official site, or register for the closed PS4 beta. Aside from that, the 'Guinness World Records 2015 Gamer's Edition' is on sale now.
