‘PixelJunk Sidescroller’ Launch Trailer Released

By | 5 years ago

The genre known as the side-scrolling shooter is pretty much synonymous with the term ‘retro,’ immediately conjuring up images of a lone spaceship moving in one direction, shooting at anything that pops up, and power-ups aplenty. Whether it be Gradius, R-Type, or any other, this genre defines ‘old school.’ And with that comes old school difficulty, which many newer titles in the genre try to emulate. The latest in the PixelJunk series, PixelJunk Sidescroller, looks to be no different.

The game has already appeared at both E3 and Gamescom this year, with a full trailer appearing at the latter show, and suffice to say, it looks like crazy amounts of fun. And now that the game is due for release in a couple of days, the official launch trailer has been released as well, showcasing everything PixelJunk Sidescroller has to offer in one convenient nutshell.

Have a look for yourself at the trailer below:

Everything you’d expect to see in an old school sidescrolling shooter is here. With a massive high score is clearly visible at the top of the screen, a ton of power-ups, not to mention cool synth-tastic voice-overs triggered when you get one.

But the core aspect of this genre is still evident in the game, particularly where difficulty is concerned. Though there are multiple settings for the players to choose from, it still looks like an insanely difficult challenge overall. In particular are a couple of boss fights, as well as a few sequences shown in the trailer, which look to bring new meaning to the term ‘bullet hell.’ Also included is co-op, which is pretty common in most games these days, but in a sidescrolling shooter is a nice touch that should be a lot of fun.

The title will arrive in a few days, and will be part of Sony’s ‘Only On PlayStation Network‘ promotion going on at the moment. From what we can tell from the trailer, if you’re looking for a serious challenge, you won’t want to miss this.

PixelJunk Sidescroller will be available October 25th, 2011 for the PlayStation Network.
