Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You!, the latest Pokemon feature length film, has been somewhat of a magnet for controversy. Fans were upset when it was revealed that series regulars Brock and Misty would be cut from the film, and others were unable to accept a complete retelling of Ash and Pikachu's origin. The movie has once again found itself criticized by longtime fans of the franchise thanks to a shocking twist that comes near the end of the story.

Anyone worried about spoilers for Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You! should go watch the movie for themselves, but those curious about the latest outrage directed at the film should read on. As it turns out, Pikachu actually speaks English at the end of the movie, a decision that has been met with much derision from the community, if the not safe for work live reaction below is any indication.

Pikachu speaking English is a major departure from the character's usual behavior, and so it's understandable why some fans are upset by it. However, there is precedence for a Pokemon speaking English. In fact, Team Rocket's sidekick Meowth has spoken English since the show's earliest episodes, and numerous other Pokemon, particularly legendaries, have also spoken English in a number of Pokemon movies over the years.

While Pikachu is unlikely to start speaking English in the anime TV series, theatergoers should get used to a talking version of the world's most popular Pokemon. After all, the upcoming Detective Pikachu live-action film is expected to sport a talking Pikachu (not unlike the game it's based on), with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson reportedly being considered for the title role.

Love it or hate it, talking Pikachu is here to stay in one way or another. Perhaps audiences will warm up to the idea, but for now, it's clear that many fans are not happy with Pikachu's newly learned language.

Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You! had a limited theatrical run earlier this month, but will be coming to home media at some point in the future.
