Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has shed some light in regards to backward compatibility on the upcoming Xbox Series X. In a recent podcast, Phil talked about how the company is already working on backward compatible titles and how he personally is testing many of them.

Backward compatibility has become a selling point for consoles. The E3 2015 announcement that the Xbox One would be backward compatible with Xbox 360 games was a very popular and exciting reveal at the time.

With the Xbox Series X looking to continue some of the goodwill that has been created with the second half of the Xbox One's lifecycle, it's no surprise that this functionality is a focus point for the Xbox Series X.

Phil Spencer has been able to beta test his own Xbox Series X since December. Not only has be been testing the console for possible next-gen games, but Spencer also says that he's been using it as his primary console thanks to backward compatibility.

The plan is for the Xbox Series X to be able to play all Xbox One games, which is also reportedly what the PS5 is attempting with the PS4. Phil is a part of the team that is working on compiling and even testing that list. Many have also discussed the idea of Xbox Game Pass being a part of the functionality, meaning that all of the great Xbox One titles could be playable on the Xbox Series X with the subscription (along with all of the Xbox Series X titles as well of course).

Phil says that the Xbox Series X runs significantly faster than the Xbox One X thanks to UI functionality and, more importantly, the built-in SDD technology inside of the Series X. Phil that joked that if he loads into a Destiny 2 strike faster than expected, it may be because of the box he's playing on. Whether on next-gen games or on backward compatible titles, SSD technology can significantly cut down on loading times.

Phil, and the entire Xbox team, has high hopes and aspirations for the Xbox Series X. By all accounts, the PS4 outperformed in this generation, and even the Nintendo Switch has been impressive over the past three years in ways that the Xbox One perhaps hasn't been. The marketing push for the Xbox Series X is going to be quite intense, and no doubt every avenue from power, to SDD, to the first-party line-up, to backward compatibility, and everywhere in-between will be tackled in Xbox's bold marketing strategy. Phil Spencer is making sure of it personally.
