The first of our Spike VGAs surprise reveals has arrived and it is a game called The Phantom Pain by mysterious Swedish developer Moby Dick Studio. While not much is known about the game at this time, the trailer was compelling enough to have us intrigued to know more.

From a gameplay perspective it looks like Phantom Pain will be more about traversal than combat, and will feature some iconography that is more akin to the F.E.A.R. or Silent Hill franchises (flaming whale anyone?). And of course the boldest of the game's design decisions is its protagonist, who has a prosthetic arm with a hook on the end of it.

As the trailer opens our protagonist wakes up to find himself in a hospital, his arm gone, and will little to no recollection of how he ended up there. And from there things only start to get weirder. Questions about the nature of what is real and what is a dream flash across the screen as stranger and stranger happenings begin to occur.

Hellish images and creatures appear, a military group begins executing patients, and our player tries to make his way to safety whilst in a wholly comprised state. How this scenario will feed into the gameplay is unclear, but we're intrigued.

What do you think of the trailer for Phantom Pain? What do you make of the game's imagery and set-up?

Phantom Pain currently has no release date.
